Sharing Secrets In Okinawa

I’ve wanted to visit Okinawa for a few years now.

There’s a lot about these Japanese islands that has captured my imagination. Not only is Okinawa home to one of the world’s largest group of people over 100 years of age, the islands are known for their laid-back vibe. Okinawa was even featured in The Karate Kid II, and it has some of the most abundant coral reefs found in the world. We’ve wanted to visit Japan as a family for a long time, so this really appeals!

So when Be Okinawa reached out to us to introduce their new The Secret is Out video series I was happy to take a look. The video series focuses on how Okinawa is believed to make people feel open and true to themselves.

As someone who’s interested in visiting the islands, I spent a lot of time checking out the destinations in the different videos. You can find each of these destinations in The Secret is Out video series. (More videos can be found at the end of this post.)

Ishigaki Island

Ishigaki Island Okinawa

Ishigaki Island is a fantastic place to check out the unique local Yaeyama island cuisine at food stalls in local markets. The nearby Tamatorizaki Observatory is worth a stop and is well known for its beautiful displays of hibiscus flowers.

Kabira Bay

Kabira Bay Okinawa

Kabira Bay is one of the best-known spots on Ishigaki island. Unfortunately, strong currents mean that you can’t swim here, but you can view coral and marine life from the comfort of a glass-bottomed boat.

Zanpa Cape

Zanpa Cape Okinawa

Located in the middle of Okinawa Island, Zanpa Cape is home to a tall white lighthouse. Nearby, you’ll find thickets of Adan (screw pine) trees. It’s a popular fishing spot. Close by, a Shisa lion-dog guards the entrance to the Zanpa Misaki Recreation Plaza where you can find bikes, restaurants, shops, and even a place to BBQ.

Taketomi Island

Taketomi Island Okinawa

Taketomi Island is about six kilometers southwest of Ishigaki. It’s a tiny island, and totally flat. The island’s town is designated a National Traditional Architecture Preservation District, and it’s a pleasant stroll among the rows of charming houses with red tiled roofs and garden walls of coral stone.

The Secret is Out Okinawa Video Series

Okinawa Tourism invited six people from all around the world to visit Okinawa (US, Singapore, France, Thailand, China and Germany). Each person had a secret they were keeping from their loved ones. The videos in the The Secret is Out series share how these people confess their secret to their loved ones. The videos tell the story of how Okinawa is believed to make people feel open and true to themselves.

Pop and Fern

Pop and Fern are a young couple from Bangkok, Thailand. They visit Okinawa to relax and enjoy some time together before their wedding, but Pop is about to reveal a secret he’s hidden from Fern. This video tells Pop’s secret.

Lonnie and Julie

At 65, Lonnie has never left the USA. Julie, his daughter, flies him to Okinawa to introduce him to travel outside the US, and to tell him a very sensitive personal secret. Here’s the story of Julie’s secret.

    Tickling The Florida Keys

Not really having a plan except knowing we wanted to spend some time in the southern states, we booked a cheap flight from San Jose, Costa Rica to Miami, Florida. The weather was gorgeous and we were looking forward to North American style dining, shopping and ease of travel. It also didn’t hurt that the local language was English again. At a minimum, the kids were definitely excited to be able to watch cartoons in English now.

After a few quiet days laying low and acclimatizing ourselves to the US, our wanderlust finally kicked back in. I hadn’t been to Florida since I was in my mid teens and really didn’t remember that much about it. One thing I do remember is that we didn’t go any farther south than St. Petersburg. This trip I was adamant about seeing the Florida Keys and going for a hike in the Everglades.

We managed to rent a car and headed south for a few days of exploration. The kids and Micki were excited to see…

Howler Monkeys or What The Hell Was That?

One thing that we’ve discovered since getting into Tamarindo is that wildlife can sometimes surround you without actually having to search for it. We’ve also found that some monkeys can be a little intimidating. I’m not talking about their body size (though some of those male dangly bits look downright painful to have while hanging onto a 30 foot branch) but rather their sound.

The male howler monkey is known for two things out here. One is those afore mentioned dangly bits and the other is for the loud howling it does. It’s a bit of a unique sound and the closest I can approximate would be a cross between a Tarzan howl and a loud, deep guttural growl. They say that the howlers cry can reach almost 5 km’s and is one of the loudest land animals. After hearing it firsthand, I can believe it.

Now imagine this scenario. It’s five am the second morning after getting into Tamarindo. You’re feeling quite comfortable and secure in your 3rd story condo knowing that thieves or any “bad” people would need to jump the 10 foot high razor blade covered outer wall then perform a spiderman feat of climbing nearly 30 vertical feet to get to your balcony. Now imagine being woken up with superhuman loud guttural screams only feet from where you’re sleeping…

Travel Photo: Angkor Wat Temple in Siem Reap, Cambodia

The Angkor Wat Temple in the Siem Reap Province of Cambodia is a gorgeous example of Khmer architecture. It was built in the 12th century and is the only temple in the area that has seen consistent use since it was built. It is a large complex spanning over 500 acres.

It has become a major tourist destination in Southeast Asia and is the number one tourist destination in Cambodia. It’s located around 6 kilometers from the town of Siem Reap and passes are required to enter the Angkor area. They are on sale at the front gate for 1-day ($20), 3-day ($40), or 7-day ($60) intervals. The 3-day pass is valid for any 3 days within a week, while the 7-day pass is valid for any 7 days within a month.

When we were there we hired a tuk tuk driver in Siem Reap…

Travel Photo: Orangutan at Bukit Lawang Indonesia

The Bohorok Orangutan Centre at Bukit Lawang in Indonesia is one of the only places in the world where you can see orangutans in the wild.

Half a dozen orangutans were swinging in the trees around us when we snapped this photo. The rangers were feeding some of the orangutans on a feeding platorm a few feet away.

Bukit Lawang is a small village deep in Sumatra’s forest, packed with backpacker hostels and cafes. To get there, we took a ferry from Penang, Malaysia to Medan, Indonesia, and jumped on board a mini-bus to Bukittinggi. From Bukittinggi, we took a local bus on roads with potholes deep enough to lose a car.
