Our Best Dozen Travel Articles

Lash of Lash World Tour is a woman after my own heart.

She used to be a baker (me too!) and has started the Travel Bloggers Best Dozen series in honor of her pastry flinging days.  The idea is to let travel writers highlight some of their best posts for their readers.

Without further ado, here are what we think are our best articles for 2012.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go grab a donut.

Montezuma: Artisan Paradise or Failed Hippie Rejuvenation Project?

Montezuma is a tiny town on the remote coast of Costa Rica’s Nicoyan Peninsula, famous for a bohemian vibe. We went expecting peace, love and freedom, but instead we found a really odd, unhappy vibe that we just couldn’t put our finger on.

Apparently, Montezuma has quite a few fans, as the comments quickly got pretty heated.

My favorite comment accused us of being shocked that people smoked weed. Dude, it’s one of our favorite shows, and I spent seven years in the academic world. Ever met a graduate student?

The DIY Guide to Snorkeling with Endangered Sea Turtles in Akumal Mexico

As a family with two little kids, we don’t get to do a lot of extreme sports and bungee jumping anymore. But we do get to experience some things that I think are a whole lot cooler – like Cole’s first time ever snorkeling. It just happened to be with endangered sea turtles in Mexico.

Why Sardinia is a Perfect Walking Destination

Picking the perfect walking destination is all about finding somewhere that matches your interests and ability level. With its variety of hiking opportunities, balmy climate and historical attractions, Sardinia is somewhere that really does have a wide appeal.

One of the first things that makes Sardinia ideal for walking holidays is its beautiful Mediterranean climate. Typically, the weather is warm and mild in March, April and May, becoming hot throughout June, July and August and then beginning to cool again.

The DIY Guide to Snorkeling with Endangered Sea Turtles in Akumal Mexico

The Mayan Riviera has a reputation for being expensive and touristy. There’s some truth to this, but it’s possible to check out some of the best sites in the area for not much more than the cost of decent latte. The little beach town of Akumal wins big points for delivering one of the coolest attractions in the area for almost nothing: snorkeling with endangered green sea turtles.

Hanging With The Locals and Smooth Sounds

Yesterday was kind of a unique day for us here in Playa. Not only was it Sunday but it was also the last day of the Jazz Festival. The reason Sunday is kind of special here is that most Mexicans (or I guess anybody who lives and works here) gets the day off. Most of the locals work 6 days a week and Sunday is their one day to get out and enjoy what this area has to offer. A lot of quiet areas around town are suddenly filled and there are times where it actually feels like you’re living in a Mexican town and not some immense resort.

We had heard that it could get a little busy on Sundays and to be honest the first two Sundays we kind of stuck around the condo. One thing we’ve learned early on about ourselves is that we’re not big crowd people. We usually love when something big is going on but not for the same reasons as most people. We’ve learnt when the crowd goes one way, we go the other. It’s usually the best time to see and explore touristy areas without having a million people ruining the fun. It usually works well for us…

Best of Playa Del Carmen Restaurants

Eating out in Playa del Carmen can be expensive. Many of Playa’s restaurants, especially those on Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue) cater to the tourist crowd. While some are fantastic, they cater almost exclusively to tourists, and the prices reflect it.

Since we were in town for a couple of months, we spent some time finding out where the locals go for a taste of the real and affordable Playa del Carmen. This is in no way a complete list of Playa’s restaurants, but they are some of our favorites. Feel free to check any of them the next time you’re down there.

Best Breakfast: La Cueva Del Chango

With it’s unique garden style patio, and turtle and poi pond under a concrete canopy fitted with glass bottles to let in the sun, La Cueva Del Chango was by far our favorite breakfast place. The decor definitely makes the place stand out, however the food was delicious and a decent price as well. The kids loved walking around and watching the turtles. Their french toast was Charles’ favorite, but Micki and kids loved their granola concoction.

    Best Pizza: Pizza Bella Vita

When we first arrived and asked people for suggestions on restaurants this place came up more than once. Seems that it was on everyone’s favorite list. After trying it for ourselves it quickly became a regular staple. Only a block from Mamitas Beach, we either stopped here before heading to the beach or on our way back. The pizza melted in your mouth and the calzones were incredibly light and crunchy. The place is run by a young Italian owner and is fairly new. They have some odd topping selections, but after trying most of them out you can’t go…
