A Love Letter To Grand Old Hotels

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what makes any trip really special. For me, it rarely matters how much money I saved (or even spent!) or how quickly I got there. It’s all about the experiences.

Sometimes the experiences are huge, like seeing the sun set over ancient temples at Angkor Wat, riding camels in the desert, or even a hot air balloon ride over the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia.

Sometimes the experiences that makes a trip special are simple things like a steaming espresso in a café on a busy street corner or watching the sun set over the ocean.

Sometimes the experience is as as simple as weekend at a truly great hotel.

Doorman in White Gloves

It seems like forever since we’ve spent the weekend at a really great grand old hotel. Once in a while we snag a great deal, and get a chance to spend some time in a hotel that offers something really special.

You know the hotels I mean.

The hotels with the huge lobbies gleaming with polished wood, where you just might run into someone famous reclining casually in an overstuffed chair.

Hotels with room service wheeled to your room and served with a red rose on a white tablecloth.

Fine Dining at the Sofitel London St James

Hotels with a real library, stocked with worn hardcover books and cozy chairs facing a fireplace.

Hotels with a concierge who calls you Ma’am or Sir without a trace of irony, even when you’ve just stopped by the front desk disheveled and bleary after a long night on the town.

Hotels where the staircases and chandeliers are works of art in and of themselves.

Hotels where the bellboy is over 60 years old, and loves to tell stories about the time Carey Grant stayed in the Rose Room.

Hotels with restaurants where your waiter knows more about wine than most professional sommeliers.

The Balcon Restaurant

Hotels only a stones throw from the city’s best landmarks, like the hotels you can find from Accor.

Hotels in the center of world class cities like London, Paris, Istanbul or New York.

Hotels where they serve an afternoon tea.

Hotels where the parking valet is trained to be so unflappable that he doesn’t raise an eyebrow when you drive up in your 2001 Honda Accord, which is speckled with rust and dinged from the time you missed the corner at the drive through.

Hotels where the valet parking whisks your car away to some unknown garage, but can return it within 10 minutes flat (and somehow smelling nicely of vanilla).

Sofitel So SPA London

Hotels where the thread count on the sheets is higher than you would ever buy for home.

Hotels, where in some obscure corner, they quietly hang photos of famous guests. And most of the photos are of great presidents and iconic film stars.

And, above all, hotels that offer a great deal in their off season. 🙂

There are many things we love in a standard hotel, but what amenities do you love in a truly great hotel?

The Quiet Life in Playa Tambor and Santa Lucia

In my last post about our travels in Costa Rica we were bouncing our way South down the Nicoya Peninsula. I say bouncing simply because the only road from Naranjo to Paquera is about as rough a road as you’ll ever drive. After such a tough stretch driving down, we were greatly relieved to finally make it to our planned destination.

We were hopeful that Santa Lucia, Tambor and Montezuma would ease our frazzled nerves and give credence to their well deserved reviews. Well, that isn’t totally true. After that rough road we were anxious to just sit back and rest. We weren’t sure Santa Lucia and Tambor would offer much respite, but we looked forward to seeing them regardless.

We had met another couple that had stayed in Santa Lucia while we were day tripping out of San Jose a few weeks before. Long story short, they loved the area, but said there really wasn’t a whole lot to do in Santa Lucia proper. Oh sure, they went ziplining, did a little snorkeling, walked the beaches and went kayaking but there wasn’t a lot to do in the town itself. Following their advice, we simply cruised through town and did a quick stop at the local beach to check out the views. After a bit of walking around, we jumped back into the jeep and headed to Tambor.

The area around Santa Lucia was gorgeous (as expected) however they were right on the money in terms of things to do. If you’re hoping for a string of restaurants and a wild nightlife just keep on trucking. Santa Lucia is perfect for…

Capturing Precious Fall Moments with the Canon EOS Rebel SL1

Now that we have our new Canon EOS Rebel SL1, we thought it would be a perfect chance to put this little DSLR camera through its paces. While falling in love with our new camera, we’ve visited a pumpkin patch and petting zoo with some friends and their kids, walked around the park by Okanagan Lake, hiked along Mission Creek, visited a few wineries and even just taken in the fall colors at our local playground. Come with us as we take a look at what this little beauty can do while capturing the fall beauty of beautiful British Columbia.

Walk On The Wild Side: Discover The Everglades National Park

It seems that every year, we hear more bad news about the demise of the world’s natural habitats. The words overpopulation, deforestation and extinction have become all too commonplace.

We had a chance to explore the Everglades a couple of years ago, and came out of our experience with a deeper understanding of the diversity and importance of wetlands around the world.

Travel Photo: Farang Beach, Koh Mook, Thailand

Koh Mook, a small island paradise in the South West of Thailand in the Andaman Sea is a place of quiet tranquility. Due to it’s small size and lack of almost anything, this is the perfect place to get away from it all. There are a few small resorts on the island however the place remains fairly low key even in the high season.

Besides for spending your days lounging in the 28°C ocean and stretching out on the glistening white sand, you’ll probably find yourself enjoying a beer or two as your days slowly blend into each other. The biggest excitement of the day is watching the few longtail boats drop off and escort away the guests of the island since that’s the only way to get there. Occasionally you’ll see a sailboat tied up off the tip of the bay and the occasional diving boat might drive by in the distance.

In the morning there are usually a few…

  1. Oh those stairs are to die for! I used to work in a 5*hotel in San Francisco and nothing beats great customer service! I love the old and the modern, but when you walk in and it gives you that mouth dropping “WOW” moment. That is what I love!

  2. Your memories of vanilla scents in a car which was returned within 10 minutes from a faraway parking garage are understandably pleasant. It’s also easy to comprehend how you became enthralled with services so professional that they don’t comment on or notice any “sub-par” elements of the client’s vehicle.

  3. Experiencing great service and amenities from a hotel really makes trips that much more enjoyable, so much that it’s almost as if you never want to leave! You really paint a descriptive picture of the joys of grand hotels, thanks for sharing!
