What an experience! I’m going to Koh Samui the end of this year and I think I’ll stick with the quick ferry.

I know this is an old story but I enjoyed it. I have experienced cockroaches crawling all over me on an overnight bus to Phuket from Bangkok – that was over 10 years ago too. I had the best seat on the coach – top deck, front row (where I could stretch out), I was chuffed to bits at the seating/sleeping arrangements, and then the lights went out – I didn’t get a wink of sleep all night because of the cockroaches. I was in Koh Samui in July last year but got the ferry from Don Sak (Surat Thani).

Wow that sounded dreadful.

I only took the ferry from Samui to Phanghan and that was ok.

Will definitely not be taking this one after reading your story.

I completely refuse to do anything other than fly to Ko Samui these days (if traveling from the mainland). I still have bad memories of a super delayed train trip and being freezing all night because we didn’t realize we could individually control the air con on the train. Duh! As others have said, at least you got a good story!

In reply to Gabi (The Nomadic Family). Gabi, the midnight ferries in Asia are all over the place and some are even going upscale with separate sleeping chambers. I originally wrote this piece over 10 years ago and I know that it's no longer as bad as it was.

Even at the lowest point on a bad travel leg I can still make myself feel better by telling myself it'll make a good story one day.To be honest, most days I'd still rather be on a bad ferry going someplace than sitting behind a desk with a pile of work ahead of me. :)
