What Is an eSIM?

An eSIM is essentially a digital version of the little physical SIM card that goes inside your phone.

International roaming has become easier with many mobile carriers, but easy doesn’t necessarily mean cheap.

Depending on your regular mobile plan and where you’re traveling, your carrier may charge a daily roaming fee for using your phone abroad. One phone might be manageable. Start multiplying that by two parents, two kids and a week or two of travel and it’s worth doing the math.

With a prepaid travel eSIM, you know what the data package costs before you leave.

You can compare that price with what your regular carrier would charge you for roaming and decide which makes more sense for your trip.

Traveling with kids tends to multiply everything, including devices.

Both parents may want mobile data. Older kids may have their own phones, and plenty of families bring a tablet along for flights and long travel days.

That can make international roaming expensive pretty quickly.

With eSIMs, you can look at what each person actually needs instead of automatically turning roaming on for every device.

Maybe both parents need data throughout the trip, while a child’s device stays mostly on hotel Wi-Fi. Maybe your family uses a cellular iPad for maps, entertainment or looking things up while you’re out.

What About Calls and Text Messages?

This is one detail worth checking before you buy.

Under EU Regulation 261/2004, often called EU261, airlines must provide assistance, alternative travel options, and sometimes financial compensation when flights are canceled. Understanding your rights and knowing what steps to take can help you manage the situation effectively and potentially claim compensation when your flight is canceled.

Understanding EU Passenger Rights

EU261 applies to most flights departing from an EU airport, regardless of the airline’s nationality. It also applies to flights arriving in the EU if they’re operated by an EU-based airline. The regulation establishes clear rules regarding passenger rights when flights are canceled, delayed, or when passengers are denied boarding.

When a flight is canceled, the airline must offer passengers several options. These include a full refund of the ticket price or rerouting to the final destination at the earliest opportunity or at a later date convenient to the traveler.

These protections apply regardless of your nationality or where you purchased your ticket, as long as the flight falls within the scope of the regulation.

Step 1: Confirm the Reason for the Cancellation

The first thing to do when your flight is canceled is to speak with the airline and confirm why the cancellation occurred. The reason matters because it determines whether you might be entitled to financial compensation.

If the cancellation is caused by factors within the airline’s control, such as technical problems with the aircraft, operational issues, or staff shortages, passengers may qualify for compensation.

However, airlines are not required to pay compensation if the cancellation results from what EU law calls extraordinary circumstances. These include severe weather conditions, political instability, airport closures, security risks, or air traffic control strikes. In these cases, the airline must still assist passengers but is not obligated to pay compensation.

Understanding the reason for the cancellation will help you determine your next steps.

Step 2: Choose Between Refund or Rebooking

When your flight is canceled, EU law gives you a choice between several alternatives.

You can request a full refund of your ticket. This refund must cover the unused portion of your journey. If your trip involved connecting flights and the cancellation makes the remainder of the journey pointless, the airline may also need to provide a return flight to your original departure airport.

Alternatively, you can ask to be rebooked on another flight to your final destination. Airlines are required to offer rerouting under comparable transport conditions as soon as possible.

In some cases, airlines may offer rerouting at a later date that suits you better. This option can be useful if your travel plans are flexible.

Step 3: Know Your Right to Care

Even if the airline isn’t responsible for the cancellation, it still has a duty to care for passengers who are stranded at the airport.

This duty includes providing meals and refreshments appropriate to the waiting time. Passengers are also entitled to communication assistance, such as the ability to make phone calls or send emails. If the new flight departs the next day, the airline must provide hotel accommodation and transportation between the airport and the hotel.

If the airline fails to provide these services, you may pay for reasonable expenses yourself and request reimbursement later. Be sure to keep all your receipts.

Step 4: Check If You’re Entitled to Compensation

One of the most important aspects of EU261 is the possibility of financial compensation when flights are canceled. The amount of compensation depends on the flight distance and the circumstances surrounding the cancellation.

In general, passengers may receive:

€250 for flights up to 1,500 kilometers
€400 for flights between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometers
€600 for flights longer than 3,500 kilometers

Compensation typically applies if the airline cancels the flight less than 14 days before departure and the disruption was within the airline’s control.

However, compensation may be reduced or not paid if the airline provides an alternative flight that arrives close to the original scheduled arrival time.

Understanding these rules is essential if you want to claim compensation when your flight is canceled.

Step 5: Gather Evidence

If you intend to claim compensation, documentation is essential.

Keep the following items whenever possible:

Boarding passes or booking confirmations
Emails or notifications from the airline
Photos of airport departure boards showing the cancellation
Receipts for meals, transportation, or accommodation
Written communication with airline staff

These records can help support your claim and prove that the cancellation disrupted your journey.

Step 6: Submit a Compensation Claim

Passengers can submit a compensation request directly to the airline. Most airlines offer online forms where you can provide your flight details and describe what happened.

The airline will review the claim and determine whether compensation is owed under EU261 rules. In some cases, airlines may initially reject claims by arguing that the cancellation resulted from extraordinary circumstances.

If this happens, passengers may escalate the issue by filing a complaint with the national aviation authority or using a third party claims service.

Many travelers choose to use specialized claim companies that handle compensation cases on their behalf. Services such as AirHelp assist passengers by managing the claim process and negotiating with airlines.

These companies usually operate on a no win, no fee basis, meaning they take a percentage of the compensation only if the claim is successful.

For travelers unfamiliar with the legal process, such services can simplify the process of obtaining compensation when your flight is canceled.

How Long Do You Have to Claim?

The deadline to claim compensation varies by country because national laws determine the limitation period.

In many European countries, passengers have several years to submit a claim. This means that even if you didn’t immediately pursue compensation after your flight cancellation, you may still be eligible to file a claim later.

However, it’s always best to begin the process as soon as possible while the details of the journey are still fresh and documentation is easily available.

Practical Tips to Reduce Travel Disruption

What we powered

The Bluetti PV100L 100W folding solar panel was the Elite 100 V2’s perfect companion. We set up the weirdly attractive heather grey backed solar panel on a wooden picnic table with the kind of satisfaction usually reserved for building Lego. One moment it’s a nice little package, the next it unfolds into a miniature solar farm that looks very proud of itself.

Easy setup

Even on a slightly uneven picnic table, setup took less than a minute. Unclip, unfold, clip angle according to the sun, and it starts collecting power like a sun loving cat discovering a warm beam. No fuss and no need for instructions. The fact the solar panel includes a simple marked clip of different angles makes choosing your favorite angle as easy as a button. (Because it’s literally a button.)

How it performed

Fall clouds drifted in and out, but the panel still fed the Elite 100 V2 a steady stream of solar goodness once we put it in the sun. Paired together, they looked like a tiny outdoor command center while we relaxed with snacks and pretended to be very outdoorsy.

The panel handled dust, wet leaves, a curious puppy and a light breeze without issue. Even on the rough picnic table, the folding 100W panel felt solid. The built in cable (tucked nicely in it’s own waterproof zippered compartment), coupled with the Bluetti’s included power bank connector made the connection fast, easy and secure.

If you want a reliable, lightweight solar setup for camping, picnics, road trips, or beach days, this panel delivers. It is sturdy, portable, and oddly satisfying to use. I’ve averaged over 10km each the half dozen times I’ve taken it out so far and every time I’ve realized that it’s likely the best mid size electric commuter scooter I’ve used so far.

Stay with me while I reminisce to the simpler push powered days of scooters and why electrics are so much more fun before I get into the review proper. Feel free to skip the next section for the review proper.

My Love of Scooters Backstory

Long before electric scooters were a thing and Lime, Bird and their rental fleet ilk were still a far off dream, our family were using push scooters to get around locally. When our oldest was not much older than a toddler, we bought him a scooter and I can vividly remember asking Micki if I should get one too.

Back then there weren’t many options but I eventually found an adult sized push one (that I still enjoy to this day) and we would often head out together. Car trips across the country would often include us throwing the scooters in the back and the amount of laps we’ve done in the nearby parks over the years would make a Nascar racer jealous.

A few years later Micki decided she wanted in on the action so we got another one. As our daughter got bigger, we bought her a small one and when both kids got older, we swapped theirs out for adult sized ones as well.

Fast forward a few more years and electric scooters are everywhere. Now found in most North American and European cities, love them or hate them, the truth is they’re out there, they’re a great way to get around and much easier on the environment (and cheaper) than jumping in a Taxi or even taking an Uber.

While they’ve changed over the years, the Segway Ninebot series have always been considered a solid electric scooter. So, where does the current iteration stand? Let’s take the Segway Ninebot E3 Pro out and see how it fares.

Segway E3 Pro Electric Scooter Review

Receiving the large box the Segway E3 Pro scooter came in was surprising. A bit larger and heavier than I expected, I wasn’t sure how much assembly I would need to do. Luckily, as I opened the box, I quickly realized that Segway had put assembly instructions on everything from the box itself telling how to lift it out to nicely labelling every part it came with.

To be honest, there really wasn’t a lot to assemble. Basically just a few screws using the included 3 way hex key. Opening the box itself, the scooter was folded over and included a large velcro band securing everything together. Unfortunately, I was so excited to get it set up that I forgot to take a few pictures of the unpacking process…

That said, it literally comprised of pulling the scooter out, undoing the velcro strap, adjusting the steering then putting a few screws in. That’s it!

Segway E3 Pro Features

Standing back, I admired the flashing lights as I hit the power button.

Instantly you realize the Segway E3 Pro includes handlebar mounted turning lights, a bright brake light, a headlight, colored undermount deck LEDs plus a nice central speedometer with battery and mode indicator. There are even a few thoughtfully placed stickers telling you how to run the scooter if you just want to jump on and take it for a ride.

The Segway E3 Pro features 4 riding modes that you can switch between by double pressing the Power button. You can either do it while traveling or while the scooter is stationary. The nice and bright 3 inch display will switch between W, E, D or S so you’ll always know which mode you’re in.

Like most e-scooters, each mode has it’s own max speed and ride lengths. Essentially, the faster you go, the quicker your battery drains and the lower your max distance will be so if you’re hoping for a longer distance or, if your battery is draining quickly and you still have a ways to go, drop the mode down.

Walking mode: A slow max 6km/h (4mph) top speed designed to match a fast walking pace. (Perfect for riding next to a walking friend or spouse.)

Eco Mode: Max speed is 15km/h (10mph)and estimated ride lengths of up to 55 km (35 miles). This is the one if you’re driving through the park with a lot of people around or need to really extend your driving distance as it has by far the longest run times.

Default Mode: Max speed is 25km/h (16mph) and ride lengths of up to 40km (25 miles). This is the default mode and suits the E3 Pro just fine for most users who are comfortable on a scooter. Great for side streets and just fooling around.

Sport Mode: Max speed is 32km/h (20mph) and ride lengths of up to 25km (16 miles). This is the fastest mode and great for those riders who have a bit more experience or crave a bit more speed. Note that this could be higher than legal speed in some jurisdictions.

Most of my 10km+ rides have been in Sport mode and I’m usually left with around 60% battery when I return home however do note that I ride in a hilly city. My 25km/h 10km drive had over 75% remaining as I was taking it easy and keeping to somewhat flat areas so those numbers above don’t seem far off. Of course, these speeds and max distances will vary with rider weight (max 120kg or 260lbs), driving style and terrain so your own mileage may differ.

The bonus is that the E3 Pro rolls decently even when power is off so pushing it home if you exceeded your range is doable. (I went up and down my street testing it out and was surprised how well it pushed like this.)

Segway E3 Pro On Road Tests

The 800W max power motor can easily handle slopes up to 18% and on my third trip I hit a local hill that had a very steep mid 20’s incline. It dropped me down to 22km/h on the steepest parts but never slowed beyond that so I was overall impressed with the power of the E3 Pro on the hills.

Heading back down the hill, the front drum brake and rear electric regenerative braking handled braking just fine and the 10 inch tubeless tires coupled with the front and rear suspension handled the small road bumps like a champ. It did make me wish I had the F3 or even the G3 so I could really let loose on those back hills but this E3 Pro model was never intended for that style of driving.

On my way back that day I hit a few gravel paths and the Ninebot E3 Pro actually handled it better than I expected. I dropped the speed down and I wouldn’t recommend it for rough gravel however if there’s patches of smooth gravel you need to cross on your daily commute, the E3 isn’t bad. The suspension kept me in control however on the rough gravel with larger bumps again I wished for the more expensive F3 Pro or even G3 Pro Ninebot model with their higher end suspension.

Power wise, the Segway is quick to accelerate but you can tell the designers opted for a smooth acceleration rather than the raw power some cheaper brands provide. What this means is that inexperienced or younger drivers won’t be overwhelmed the first time they get on the E3 Pro. The only time I really craved faster acceleration was after stopping at a long red light and having a car impatiently waiting to turn as i jumped back on. I didn’t feel that it was bad at any other intersections so all in all I’m not really complaining.

In fact, the inclusion of the turning lights on the handlebars actually gave me more confidence in traffic than other electric scooters I’ve used in the past. Signaling my intentions let drivers know what I was doing and you could see the relief in their eyes when I behaved more like a car and not a drunk madman barreling down the sidewalk not caring who I cut off in the process.

The Segway E3 Pro handled both on street and rough sidewalk driving well and has a good weight balance to power ratio for a scooter in this class. It did remind me of a rental scooter in how solid it felt (not a bad thing) and the people I let test it out confirmed it drove similar to a few rentals they’ve used except the E3 Pro seemed a bit peppier.

Comfort wise, the grips have a nice feel and the deck feels solid without a lot of bounce. When I pushed it a little harder and jumped off a few curbs I never felt I was in danger or that the Segway couldn’t handle it. Everything feels nice and tight like a new scooter should.

The folding mechanism is straightforward if not a bit stiff. You really need to give it a solid kick with your foot to fold it. While it can be a bit tough, it also means it’s not going to accidently fold on you.

I will say the locking method in folded mode could be a bit better as, while it makes carrying it in folded mode possible, it never truly locks and I felt it could unlock on me if I wasn’t paying attention. That said, most people won’t be walking with it folded for great distances and there are tweaks you can find online to make it a little better if that’s a mode you carry it in often.

Segway E3 Pro App

Like all the newer Ninebot series, the Segway E3 Pro can be connected via Bluetooth to your phone. While there are several things you can do to control certain settings directly via the brake and power button (and various combinations of presses thereof), there is no touch screen or control stick on the scooter itself.

Changing everything from start up speed (how fast you need to push off for the motor to start being engaged) to brake regeneration amounts can all be tweaked in the Segway app. You can also change the undercarriage LED light patterns for each driving mode as well as set the brake light to solid or blinking. It also lets you easily switch from Imperial to Metric.

The app also provides a battery and speedometer on a nice dashboard if you want to mount your phone to the handlebars plus it can tell you information about everything from motor temperature to distance remaining to current firmware. The latter also lets you update the firmware in case there have been tweaks or updates since you purchased it.

I really appreciate having the distance traveled (last trip) plus total mileage being monitored as well. This would be great information to know for second hand purchasers to see how much real wear and tear the scooter has seen. It can also be a great way to see how the battery is fairing.

The app can also let you lock the Segway scooter and set alerts including a Find Me option. This is great if you’re planning to do some shopping and need to leave you scooter outside for a bit. While there is no dedicated chain lock loop on the scooter itself, the app can tell you if the scooter is moving away or has suddenly gone out of range.

Final Thoughts on the Segway E3 Pro Scooter

The Segway E3 Pro is a great daily commuter scooter for in city action. It also makes a great scooter for driving around the neighborhood, heading to the park or tackling the pavement trails. The 800w motor and 25km/h max speed (16mph) are a great combo on a scooter at this weight and price point and you get a lot of features from a major brand.

My only real gripe with the scooter is the fact it can’t do 40 km/h but that’s just wishful thinking at this pricepoint. The max 32km/h (20mph) in Sport Mode is a nice bonus for this model and is even higher than many jurisdictions in Canada and the USA allow. That said, I had no problem passing some light green colored rental e-scooters and definitely beat others off the start so the E3 Pro is no slouch.

While this Segway E3 Pro scooter was provided for me, I have zero problems recommending it to people. It sits at the sweet spot for price to power to feature list and Segway scooters are the most popular brand of scooters in North America for a reason. The quality is top notch and I suspect I’ll be putting on hundreds more kilometers on this thing over the next few years.

What you may not realize is the Riviera Maya and Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula itself also contain dense jungles and some of the best cenotes you’ll find anywhere in the world.

What’s a cenote?

Since limestone bedrock can be found all across the Mayan Riviera, over the years many of these areas of porous rock have formed into underground rivers. These freshwater underground rivers usually form caverns of crystal clear water as the limestone filters and purifies the water naturally.

Eventually, many of these caverns have collapsed and have opened themselves up to the sky, ready to be explored. These limestone sinkholes are called cenotes and there are literally thousands of them found across this Mexico region, with new ones still being found today in the Riviera Maya.

What this means for you, is that no matter where you go in the Mayan Riviera, you’ll likely find one of these inviting cenotes to spend your day. Whether you’re there just to swim, jump off the surrounding cliffs or even there to go snorkelling and scuba diving in, cenotes offer a great way to explore the Riviera Maya’s hidden world away from the beach.

Coming from the Mayan word “dzonot” or “tsonot,” which essentially translates to “well” in English, cenotes (pronounced “say-no-tays”) also hold a historical value to the region. The ancient Mayans realized that these large wells could supply enough freshwater to sustain entire villages and even larger ancient cities like Chichen Itza relied on cenotes to survive.

Some of these pools were considered sacred and everything from gold to jade to gorgeous mother of pearl jewelry have been found over the years including the bones from ancient sacrifices the Mayans did to procure a bountiful season. While the sacred pools remain closed and have been preserved, the rest of the Riviera Maya’s cenotes are open for visitors.

Types of Cenotes in Riviera Maya

There are essentially four types of cenotes found in Riviera Maya. This includes open air cenotes, semi-open cenotes, cave or semi-closed cenotes and underground cenotes.

Open air cenotes tend to resemble small ponds or lakes with the vast majority of the water easily accessible. Though they can often have steep sides, they’re fairly common to find and offer ease of access vs the other cenote styles. These are best for families as everything is within site and access to the water is usually the easiest.

Semi-open cenotes are cenotes with rocky overhangs. Often a good portion of the cenote is considered open air with corners that are partially blocked from the sky. They tend to feature darker areas that are fun to explore with snorkeling gear. Generally they’re fine for families as well.

Cave cenotes are typically cenotes with a small hole leading to the sky. It is often darker while swimming here and you often need to take a ladder to get down to the water itself. Not recommended for smaller children, they probably feature some of the best high diving you’ll find if you’re an adventure seeker.

Underground cenotes are exactly as they sound. These flooded cenotes are closed off from above and can only be explored by scuba diving and usually only with a knowledgeable guide. Also only recommended for expert cavers.

Why visit a cenote in Riviera Maya?

While sun and sand make for a great vacation, sometimes it’s nice to check out something new. With cenotes found near most of the major areas in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, getting to one often only takes a short trip. Some are also adjacent to popular archive sites or make a great stop when visiting other areas of the peninsula.

So, if exploring crystal clear, freshwater pools in a naturally formed limestone setting sounds like a perfect day away from the salt and sand of the Mayan Riviera (it really is), read on as we take a look at the best cenotes in Riviera Maya.

Cenote Cristalino

Cenote Cristalino is one of the first cenotes our family ever explored in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. Interestingly, Cenote Cristalino is also one of the first cenote posts we ever wrote on this site back in 2010 so it still holds a special place in our hearts.

Just a stones throw away from Playa Del Carmen (10 km south of Playacar proper) and an easy taxi ride to get there, it’s not as popular as some of the bigger cenotes on this list however we’ve always enjoyed the times we’ve visited it. Almost across the road from Barcelo Maya Beach All Inclusive, it’s few open clear water pools complete with nibbling minnows make it an inviting cenote to visit.

It’s also less touristy than many of this list as the area is less developed. The last time we were there a few years ago, it also hadn’t been bought out by a bigger company so it still maintains a rustic charm. You can find a place to buy snacks and changing rooms exist on site. There’s a small daily fee to get in.

Cenote Azul

Cenote Azul is a nice open cenote that appeals to families and those looking for a relaxing day out. Its shallow areas are perfect for children, while deeper sections satisfy snorkelers and those wanting to swim a few laps. The surrounding rock formations offer spots to jump from for the more adventurous visitors.

Walking distance from Cenote Cristalino, it offers more services such as showers and restrooms. There is a small fee to use the services there however it’s only a 10 minute ride from Playa Del Carmen so makes for an easy getaway if you’re staying in the region.

Cenote Dos Ojos

One of the most famous cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula, Cenote Dos Ojos, or “Two Eyes Cenote,” boasts two connected sinkholes resembling a pair of eyes. Its crystal-clear waters and extensive underwater cave system make it a paradise for snorkelers and especially divers as it features an fairly extensive labyrinth of flooded caves to explore. The light filtering through the openings also creates a magical atmosphere, perfect for underwater photography.

The day we went to Cenote Dos Ojos, we saw many more divers than swimmers. Since the water in this luminescent blue cenote can be quite deep, it’s definitely not geared towards younger families though ours were fine with the lifejackets we brought that day and the cave portion is quite cool to see.

Geared more towards divers that swimmers, there are changing rooms, bathrooms, lockers for rent and even a restaurant on site. Cenote Dos Ojos can be found approximately 22km (13 miles) north of Tulum on Carretera 307.

Gran Cenote

A short 10 min drive from Tulum proper up QROO 109, Gran Cenote is a semi-open cenote surrounded by lush vegetation. Its clear, turquoise waters are home to turtles and small fish, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling. Numerous wooden platforms and stairs provide easy access for swimming and soaking up the serene beauty of this natural pool.

While it’s much quieter than Doj Ojos, Gran Cenote is a bit more friendly towards families and is a quick trip from Tulum. There are open caves you can easily swim into and lots of the cenote bottoms have sand you can stand on. While you can’t stay right by the water, you can spread out above the cenote area. As the name implies, Gran Cenote itself is quite large.

One of the biggest draws to Gran Cenote in Maya Riviera are the turtles and the short distance to Tulum. There are showers, bathrooms, lockers and even hammocks you can use. Day fees at Gran Cenote are around the 200 peso range.

Cenote Zacil Ha

Just down the road from Gran Cenote, Cenote Zacil Ha is another cenote favorite for those staying Tulum. Cenote Zacil Ha features a very open air feeling and even includes a small zipline you can use to get into the long pool.

Cenote Zacil Ha makes a great (and cheap) refreshing stop when returning from the popular Coba archeological site. At under 100 pesos, it features bathrooms and changing rooms.

Cenote Aktun-Ha

Another cenote close to Tulum and just a few hundred meters from Cenote Zacil Ha, Cenote Aktun-Ha (“water cave”) is a very large open air cenote in Riviera Maya. It also nicknamed Cenote Carwash as the local taxi drivers used to use the water to wash their vehicles.

With plenty of turtles and fish in the cenote, it has a maximum depth of around 18m or 60ft so you’ll see the occasional diver down below as well. There are restrooms, changing rooms and platforms you can use to access the water. It also features a 10ft (3M) diving platform

Cenote Ik Kil

Located near the very cool and popular Chichén Itzá, Cenote Ik Kil is an open-air cenote with dramatic vine-covered cliffs and cascading waterfalls. The circular shape of this cenote and the hanging roots reaching down towards the water surface create a mystical vibe.

It’s a popular spot, so consider visiting early in the morning to avoid crowds or stay for a few days at one of the cabins on site. Cenote Ik Kil includes bathrooms, change rooms and even has a restaurant on site. Prices are in 100 Peso range for adults and 50 Peso for children.

Cenote Zací

While not in Riviera Maya itself, located in the heart of Valladolid, Cenote Zací is a semi-open cenote that offers a convenient break from city exploration. Its massive open cave features a small island with lush vegetation in the center, and its waters are home to rare eyeless black fish. The on-site restaurant provides a unique dining experience with views of the cenote.

Located between Cancun and Chichen Itza, Cenote Zaci is also a great stop if you’re exploring the ruins that day and want to cool off before driving the rest of the way back to Cancun. Though the waters in this cenote aren’t the clearest, swimming in the giant cavern of Cenote Zaci is an unforgettable experience. It has bathrooms, changing rooms and a restaurant on site. Prices are around 60 pesos for adults and 30 pesos for children.

 Cenote Escondido (Mayan Blue) and Cenote Cristal

Cenote Escondido, nicknamed Mayan Blue by the locals, and Cenote Cristal are both large, open-air cenotes close to Tulum. Both feature jungle settings as well as have cliff jumping (12ft or 4m) and a rope swing.

These 2 cenotes are both owned by the same company and are right next to each other. Both offer ample parking, toilets, showers and changing rooms. Each cenote costs 150 Pesos as an entry fee. If having to decide between one or the other, most people recommend Cenote Escondido over Cenote Cristal. With more area to explore, Cenote Escondido is bigger, and almost feels like you’re swimming in a river than a typical cenote.

Tips for Visiting Cenotes in Riviera Maya

• Bring Eco-Friendly Sunscreen: To protect the delicate ecosystem of the cenotes, use biodegradable sunscreen however note that many cenote owners strongly discourage any sunscreen at all to minimize the impact lotions have on the system.
• Wear Water Shoes: Many cenotes have rocky bottoms, so water shoes can help protect your feet.
• Bring Mask and Snorkel: While many sites offer snorkel rentals, the quality can be suspect and paying for each use can add up over time. Better to bring your own and, if space is tight in your bag, leave the flippers at home and just bring along your mask and snorkel.
• Respect the Environment: Keep the cenotes clean by not leaving any trash behind. Each cenote is a natural wonderland complete with a delicate ecosystem. Make sure to minimize your footprint when visiting.
• Check for Entrance Fees: Most cenotes charge an entrance fee, which is used for maintenance and preservation.
• Make sure you don’t get scammed: The most expensive cenotes charge up to 150 pesos for an adult but many charge only 50 or 60 per person.
• Leave valuables at home: Small theft around certain cenotes is a problem. Leave your valuables at the hotel or rent a locker on site if you have things you don’t want walking away.
• Extra costs for cameras and drones: A few companies have realized they can have an upcharge for people bringing in costly cameras and drones and have decided to charge extra for it. Depending on the cenote, the costs can equal the entrance fee. If you don’t need it, leave it behind.

Kelowna also has a vibrant arts scene plus hundreds of wineries, cideries and orchards that to us beat any of its Canadian equivalents. Truth be told, there’s not too many areas in the 140K populated metro that you can’t be away from people after a few minutes drive. If you’re sick of the crowds, there are tons of parks and local Kelowna hikes found throughout this city where you can at least feel like you’re getting away from it all.

Kelowna’s Wine Country

Known for its award-winning vineyards, Kelowna is the perfect spot for wine aficionados. The climate and soil combine to produce top-notch grapes. Spend your weekends touring local wineries, and don’t forget the wine festivals!

With over 300 wineries calling the Okanagan Valley home plus dozens of cideries, micro breweries and even small distilleries, you could go to a different place every day for a year and never hit the same place twice. That said, we have our own local favorites and always enjoy the chance to take visiting friends and family to a new place when the opportunity knocks. We’ve learnt that in Kelowna, your favorite place might just be down the street.

Kelowna’s Vibrant Arts and Musical Scene

Kelowna is a hub for culture, offering art galleries, theaters, and even a symphony. Whether you’re into visual arts or live performances, there’s always something happening in the cultural district.

Throughout the year, there are also dozens of festivals happening around town and it’s rare to have a weekend go by in summer without something major happening in the city. Between Kelowna and nearby Penticton, most large musical acts that hit Vancouver will also stop in town to perform as they head east. If an act or show doesn’t make it to the valley, Vancouver is only a 3 hour drive away with plenty of hotels to make your micro trip a fun one.

Moving to Kelowna? The Growing Job Market

With its booming tech industry and tourism sector, employment opportunities are on the rise in Kelowna. From startups to established companies, there’s a wide range of options for those looking to relocate here. While it didn’t make the list of best places for expats, it definitely isn’t a bad place to become an expat in Canada.

Nicknamed the little Silicon Valley of the North, Kelowna is well known for both its small startups as well as big tech companies who’ve chosen to call Kelowna home. While seasonal work brings in people from around the world, Kelowna also grew its fame as a nice retirement center for those in Canada who opted to stick around rather than head south in the winters. That original collection of young hospitality workers who helped put Kelowna on the map taking care of the retirees have now grown up and the city is booming on all fronts.

Friendly Communities in Kelowna

One thing you’ll notice is the warm and welcoming atmosphere in Kelowna. Community events, farmer’s markets, and neighborhood gatherings make it easy to meet people and feel part of the community. It seems there’s always something to do in Kelowna.

Since the vast majority of people now living in Kelowna have moved here from other locations in Canada and abroad, there is a welcoming feeling to the growing city. With a huge tourism industry, plenty of nature to explore and great weather, it’s easy to get out and meet new people.

Kelowna’s Mild Climate

Compared to other parts of Canada, Kelowna has a relatively mild climate and some of the nicest overall weather in Canada. If you hate wind, it’s also one of the least windy major cities in Canada. Though it experiences all four seasons, you definitely won’t have to deal with the harsh winters seen in other regions of Canada.

Long hot summers, mild winters (in comparison to most other Canadian Cities) and plenty of nice days in between means more opportunities to get out and explore the region. The best part is that with the mountains so close, there are tons of small micro climates you can experience depending on your location and elevation. It means that in spring you can ski in the morning and golf in the afternoon. Or, if you prefer, you can hike in the cool mornings and then bake on the beach in the afternoon all summer long.

Cons of Living in Kelowna

While it always hurts to gripe about things your city is lacking, the truth is that no city in the world is perfect on all fronts. High living costs, excessive tourism and Kelowna’s semi remote location (3.5 hours from Vancouver and 6 hours from Calgary) means that while things are relatively close in Canadian standards, the average traveler will find that Kelowna can be cut off from some of the larger centers. While that can be a huge plus for some people, others might not love it.

On that note, since we’ve already looked into some of Kelowna’s pros, let’s now dive into some of Kelowna’s cons.

Cost of Living in Kelowna

The truth of the matter is that Kelowna isn’t cheap to live in. Housing prices have soared in recent years, and day-to-day expenses like groceries and gas can also be high. Be prepared for a bit of sticker shock.

While this can be said for most places around the world these days, it’s more pronounced in Kelowna. Considered by many to be one of the most expensive cities to live in Canada, it means you can’t survive in this city if you’re only making minimum wage unless you are a large group all chipping in for the monthly rent.

Tourist Crowds in Kelowna

While tourism boosts the economy, it also means crowds, especially in the summer. This can lead to congestion, making it hard to enjoy some of the very attractions that drew you to Kelowna in the first place.

This can be easily seen when looking at traffic patterns over the course of the year. In summer, by far the busiest tourist season in Kelowna, any trip around town can easily be doubled and parking downtown or by one of the many beaches can be hard to come by. Bonus to Kelowna is that parking downtown is only around $1 an hour any time of the year with plenty of free parking outside of Monday 9 to 5 so there is that bright side.

Kelowna’s Limited Public Transport

Public transport options are limited in Kelowna, especially compared to larger cities in the country. Owning a car is almost a necessity if you plan on getting around without hassle. While plenty of University of BC students as well as Okanagan College students get to school daily via public transport buses, getting from one area of the city to another can be tough if you’re not planning on going through downtown first.

Though Uber and Uride are now available in the city, both ride sharing platforms have been slow to arrive in the city and are still lacking so you’ll often need to order a cab during the busiest times of the day if you can’t find a bus. You can also find both ebike and scooter rentals throughout the city however those aren’t ideal in the cooler winter months.

Seasonal Employment in Kelowna

While there are plenty of job opportunities, some industries in Kelowna are highly seasonal. This means job security can be a concern if you’re working in sectors like tourism. While late spring, summer and early fall can be busy, unless you’re heading to Big White for winter work, it might be harder to find something that pays the bills. That said, anyone working in the trades or for minimum wage should have zero problems finding something as jobs in those areas are always in demand here.

Kelowna’s Distance from Major Cities

Though it has plenty to offer including an international airport, a decent collection of large stores, a large shopping mall, a well ranked hockey team in the WHL, plus a thriving art scene, Kelowna is somewhat isolated from major cities like Vancouver or Calgary.

The drive to Vancouver takes around 3.5 hours and Calgary is pushing 6.5 hours provided the highways are open and clear. That’s something that isn’t always the case in the winter as both directions take you over some of Canada’s highest routes that are prone to crazy amounts of snow and even in the warmer months there are occasional rockslides to contend with. Either can severely hamper your ability to get to your farther destination easily or quickly.

Wildfires in Kelowna

In the last decade, the dry, hot summers come with a higher risk of wildfires, which can be a real concern. Smoke from nearby fires can also affect air quality during the summer months and ruin an otherwise perfect summer day in the city.

While July and August have always been Kelowna’s best months in terms of weather (with the highs in the lower 30’s every single day and not a cloud in sight), the changing climate landscape has made what were once idyllic summer days into an unknown quantity these last few years. We’ve gotten to a point where we now travel away more often in August just because there’s a good chance it will be smoky in the city.

Living in Kelowna offers a unique blend of natural beauty, a growing job market, and a vibrant community. However, it does come with its own set of challenges, like the high cost of living and seasonal crowds. Whether or not Kelowna is right for you will depend on what you’re looking for in a home base.

That said, we’ve loved our time in the city and both ourselves and our children have made friends here that will last our entire lives. There’s no denying that this Canadian gem has plenty to offer and if you can get past it’ negatives, it’s still a great place to live and work.
