What a great article. I lived in northern Alberta for 20 some years before going camping in the badlands with my wife as something that sounded vaguely interesting.

I was completely blown away by this amazing place. Everything about it is so different from the rest of the province. Saw many animals up close that were unafraid of humans. Incredible night skies unpolluted by city light and of course dinosaur bones under our feet. Would love to return some day.

Hi Mary,
Have to admit that I got my dinosaur geek on in a big way here. It's such a cool place, we must have a hundred photos of the badlands :)

Hi Gina!
Yes, the Park does let you join a real excavation on a guided tour. The Dinosaur Provincial Park is a field station for the Tyrell Museum, and they have a number of digs there, including the fossil-packed Oldman Formation. The Park has a guided tour where you join a real excavation for the day (age 14 and over only). Check it out here: http://sales.tpr.alberta.ca/dpp/default.aspx?hview=bydate

If you're looking for something even more extensive, you can call the visitor's centre directly at 403-378-4342 ext 235. Good luck!

I worked with the Tyrell Museum in Drumheller years ago, and they took us on a three day overnight dig with them. Completely and totally amazing!

You're right, haven't heard of this place! Sounds like a really neat park. Do you know if they ever have excavation digs happening that visitors can observe?

Hi Tom, Funnily enough, I grew up near the Park, and had no interest in dinosaurs growing up. All that changed when I lucked into a summer job at the Tyrell Museum in Drumheller. It's cool to be able to share what I know with my little ones, though.

I'd never heard of this place before reading your post here, guys - thanks for sharing! Looks pretty awesome, I can totally relate to your kids - I was dinosaur mad when I was their age! Alas, I didn't grow up to be a paleontologist. Off to Canada next year but only for a few days so alas I'll just have to relive my dinosaur loving early childhood through this post, and The Land Before Time.

Hi D.J. I loved that the Park is such a unique place where you can see fossils in the ground. It makes dinosaurs, and the time they lived in, so much more real. They're not just pictures in a book, or on display in a museum. At the Park, you can see their bones, and imagine what the land must have been like during their time. Awesome.
