Matthew, I'm not sure people actually sleep in Madrid! There are constantly people out and about at all hours of the day and night. With our little ones we weren't out too late however we were having a few issues with the time change from Mexico so we were up much later than normal with them. It's illegal to have open alcohol on the streets however the plazas are still a popular place to gather and drink with friends, especially on the weekend. It was more common a few years ago before the law was enacted but from what I saw and read it still happens.

Lots of plazas have bars, pubs and restaurants right off the squares and with Madrilenos typically enjoying their dinner between 10 pm and midnight and most clubs not really starting until 2 or 3 AM, late nights in Madrid is just their way of life.

We were on a very popular pedestrian only street and the only quiet time was from 7 to 10 AM when the partyers finally called it quits for the night and the little old ladies doing their morning shopping were out and about. Interesting place and if you're a night owl you'll be right at home there. Early risers need not apply. ;)

Definitely worth checking out Anthony just for the history and the crowds. Not to mention the delicious pastry shops, restaurants and bars that surround them. ;)

Cool pics. I've done quite a few of these Madrid squares during my time there and I quite like the city. It's worth pottering around to have a look and just to soak it all in while you're there.
