Petty Larceny, Wanderlust and Dreaming of a Holiday in Corfu

I love dreaming about where to go on vacation.

As a kid, I would flip through glossy vacation brochures filled with scenes of sun-drenched beaches and smiling families until the pages went limp with use. Travel agents must have hated me. I was constantly nicking their magazines.

Today, not much has changed, except I’m checking out pretty pictures online, instead of committing petty larceny against unsuspecting travel agents. I’m on a bit of a Southern Europe kick, looking at how to find Corfu holidays for our beach loving family.

Why Corfu? Cofu’s a Greek island on the Ionian sea, dotted with pretty beaches and historic ruins. The old city has made the UNESCO World Heritage List. Many think Cofu was mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey, and homeowners on the island’s exclusive northeast side include members of the Rothschild family. It sounds like a wonderful place to soak up culture and history, wander the cobbled streets of the old city and take a dip in the clear water of the Ionian sea.

If Corfu doesn’t work out, it’s not like there’s a lack of fascinating and beautiful places to hang out in Southern Europe. Maybe I should start checking out bargain Spain holidays as well? Costa Blanca’s looking pretty good, with its beautiful views and crimson sunsets.

If beaches and sunsets aren’t working, word is that there’s some stunning Gaudi architecture to see.

But most importantly… given our well documented love of ice cream, it’s nice to know that something like this would be waiting for us.

    Preparations for Playa

We’re now in full swing getting ready for our trip. Less than two weeks and we begin our first leg in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

It’s amazing how much work goes into planning a trip like this for our little family of four.

There are vaccinations to get, storage for our truck and belongings, travel insurance, adding parking insurance to the truck, doctors, dentists and optometrists appointments, organizing our condo rental in Playa (we had to transfer US cash to an Italian couple’s American bank account for a rental in Mexico from a Canadian bank… I get confused just reading that….), buying our plane tickets, checking visa requirements, letting our credit cards know we’re gone, and on and on.

    Welcome to… Costa Rica.

Our story starts on a quiet flight heading to Central America. Imagine that it’s New Year’s Eve, only a few minutes before 2011. After 2 months of lounging around the beach on the Caribbean Sea side of Mexico it suddenly dawns on us that we were about to land in a different world. Out either side of the airplane we could see fireworks going off at regular intervals all across the valley of San Jose.

As we jump off the plane and into the SUV of our driver and hotel owner Jose we were quickly whisked through lively neighborhoods filled with young Ticos preparing for the New Year. As we checked in at a quarter to midnight we found ourselves glad to be out of Mexico. Nothing against Playa but the place was starting to get a little too busy for us and we needed something new to sink our teeth into.

It wasn’t until we were unpacking our things in our room that the gong struck midnight and the city exploded in fireworks…

    Rome for the Weekend

Ah Rome – the Eternal City. So much history, so much romance, so much culture. You could spend years exploring the Italian capital and still not uncover every nook and cranny, every hidden gem. But unfortunately, most of us will not have years to while away in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. However, all is not lost, because complex and layered as it may be, Rome 101 – the real must-see places of the city – can all be done within a weekend.

    Ziplining in the Guanacaste Province

Over the course of the past few weeks we’ve had the opportunity to really explore the Guanacaste Province. After leaving San Jose we jumped on a shuttle bus to Tamarindo where we were staying for the month. The 6+ hour bus trip was quite the experience. We didn’t realize how hot and dry Tamarindo could get but after being here for a while we’ve learnt a few tricks.

In my previous post I talked about ziplining being popular in Costa Rica. That’s probably a bit of an understatement considering there are literally dozens of places to do it all over the country. We were really hoping to be able to go before we got to Costa Rica but realized that it would be near impossible with Jordan along. That was until we got into a long chat with one of the tour operators out here. It seems that kids can indeed go ziplining. The only caveat is that they need to either go with a guide or a willing parent. In our case, it was both. We were picked up at…

  1. My bride-to-be describes Corfu as one of her favourite places on earth. From your pictures it is clear to see why. There are indeed so many beautiful islands in Greece.

  2. That looks good! Greek islands are good 🙂
But in my opinion – definitely go to Italy for ice cream! I can highly recommend north Lake Garda, Finale Ligure and the Cinque Terre regions: nice climate, pretty sights, activities like hiking & cycling all around. Have a great time wherever you end up!

    1. Lindy,

You had me at ice cream. Thanks so much for the tips – we’re planning to be in Europe this spring, and I’m just overwhelmed by how many amazing places there are to visit!

  3. Stunning pix! Greek islands have always been an interest for me, the landscape and history is really intoxicating. My dream destination is India followed by Fiji. I love Indian culture on every level, food, clothes, spirituality and Fiji is just beautiful.
