I’m a single mom taking my 8 year old to Playa. I’ve been there 12 years ago and I loved it. There are tons of cheap condos on or near 5th avenue. Do you think it’s okay to stay there with an 8 year old? Can I get childcare? I’m not one for all inclusive resorts. Much rather explore. Thanks!

Hi Miguel, a day trip to Akumal is already on this list. We’ve been there numerous times and love it. It is a great day trip from Playa del Carmen and a great place for families with kids. Here’s our in case anyone is thinking of heading there on their own from Playa del Carmen. Thanks!

We will be traveling with our 4 and 7 year old and inadvertently booked a property in Cancun (Westin resort). It sounds from your post that the Playa is much nicer and the place to be. I think we’re looked in and would be grateful for your advise regarding which (if any) of these activities would still be accessible from Cancun else we’d consider trying to get out of our reservation – am partial to any kind of wildlife /nature exposure for the kids (spider monkeys, turtles, dolphins, rio secreto, bioshpere) and (wishfully!) maybe a day trip to Chichén Itzá for myself?

Hi Sara,
We’ve actually never used childcare in Playa, so I can’t say much about it.

I think you need to get a residency permit to have childcare financed by the Mexican government. It’s not extremely expensive, but it does take some time from what I’ve read. Of course, the local schools in Playa will be exclusively in Spanish.

There are some good international schools in Playa. We’ve never sent our kids to one, but other parents seemed pleased, and these schools teach in English. The private schools cost from about $300 USD a month, plus enrollment and other fees. You’d have to contact the specific schools to find out what age kindergarten starts.
