Power outages aren’t rare anymore, and portable power isn’t just for emergencies. Here’s how we’ve been using the BLUETTI Elite 400 at home.

From backup at home to everyday use outdoors, this is how we actually use the BLUETTI Elite 400.

Why We’re Thinking About Power Differently Right Now

This past winter, power outages felt less like a rare inconvenience and more like something you had to be ready for.

It wasn’t just one storm. It was a pattern. Cold snaps, wind, outages that lasted longer than you’d like. The kind where you start thinking about your fridge, your work, your internet, and how quickly things can unravel when the power goes out.

At the same time, we’re well into into spring. Which, for us, means spending more time outside again. Backyard evenings. Small projects. Sitting out with a laptop instead of being stuck inside all day.

See the BLUETTI Elite 400 here.

Those two things don’t usually connect. Home backup and outdoor use tend to live in completely different categories.

But lately, we’ve been thinking about power a bit differently.

Instead of something that only matters in an emergency, we’ve started looking at it as something that should just work wherever we are.

That’s where the BLUETTI Elite 400 came in for us. It’s a high-capacity portable power station with 3,840Wh of capacity and 2,600W of output, which means it can handle more than just phones and small devices. It’s designed for both home backup and off-grid use, but what stood out right away was how easy it is to move. It’s built like a piece of luggage, with a handle and wheels, so you can roll it wherever you need it.

Spring is here and summer is coming, the perfect season for outdoor activities. Portable power stations have quietly become one of those things you don’t think about until you need them, and then you use them all the time.

If you want to see more about it, you can check out the BLUETTI Elite 400 here.

First Impressions: This Doesn’t Stay in One Place

The first thing you notice about the Elite 400 isn’t the capacity or the specs. It’s the fact that you don’t have to lift it.

That sounds small, but it changes everything.

Most power stations we’ve used before tend to live in one spot. You put them somewhere, and that’s where they stay unless you’re really motivated to move them. This one doesn’t work like that. It has a telescopic handle and built-in wheels, so it feels more like rolling a suitcase than carrying equipment.

And once you start moving it around, you realize how much that matters.

We’ve rolled it from the kitchen to the office, out to the patio, and into the backyard without thinking twice. There’s no planning involved. No moment where you stop and wonder if it’s worth the effort. You just grab the handle and go.

That’s a big part of why it fits into everyday life more easily than we expected. It doesn’t feel like something you bring out for special situations. It feels like something you can actually use, wherever you happen to be.

Home Backup That Actually Fits Into Daily Life

One of the things we’ve always struggled with when it comes to backup power is where it fits.

Some setups feel like they require planning. Others feel like they belong in a garage or a basement, out of the way until something goes wrong.

This doesn’t feel like that.

The Elite 400 just sits where you need it. In our case, that’s meant the kitchen some days, the office on others. Sometimes it’s parked near a wall, ready to go if we need it. Other times it’s actively being used without much thought.

There’s no installation. No setup beyond plugging things in. It’s simple enough that you don’t have to think about it.

In the kitchen, it’s easy to see how useful that is. Having something that can keep essentials running without needing to rework your entire space makes a difference. It’s not about creating a perfect backup system. It’s about having something that works with the way your home already functions.

The same goes for the office. When your work depends on power, even a short outage can be disruptive. Being able to keep things running, or at least transition smoothly, takes a lot of that stress away.

The Moment That Matters: Running What You Actually Care About

It’s one thing to power small devices. Most portable units can handle that.

What matters more is whether it can handle the things you actually rely on.

For us, that’s the fridge. It’s one of those things you don’t think about until the power goes out and suddenly it’s the first thing on your mind.

Being able to plug the fridge into the Elite 400 and know it’s covered changes how you think about outages.

This is where the capacity starts to matter. With 3,840Wh and 2,600W of output, it’s designed to handle larger, more important loads, not just phones and laptops.

In real terms, that means you’re not scrambling to prioritize one device over another. You have more flexibility. You can keep the essentials running while still charging what you need.

And that’s really the difference. It doesn’t feel like a temporary workaround. It feels like a solution you can actually rely on.

Fast, Simple, and Ready When You Need It

One of the concerns people often have with something like this is how complicated it’s going to be.

In our experience, it’s not.

It charges quickly, which matters more than you might expect. You don’t always have hours to prepare before something happens. Being able to get it to a usable level quickly makes it far more practical.

There’s also nothing complicated about using it day to day. You plug things in. You turn it on. That’s it.

There’s an app if you want to use it, which lets you monitor and control things remotely, but you don’t need it to get started.

That simplicity is a big part of why we’ve actually used it as much as we have. If something feels like work, you tend to avoid it. This doesn’t.

Taking It Outside (Without Making It a Whole Thing)

We didn’t plan some big outdoor test with this.

We didn’t pack up and head off-grid for the weekend.

We just took it outside.

And that ended up being the point.

Because it’s so easy to move, it naturally made its way from inside the house to the patio, then into the backyard. No setup, no prep, no effort beyond rolling it out.

That’s where the idea of “portable power” starts to feel different. It’s not about planning an entire trip around it. It’s about having power available when you decide to step outside.

Real Outdoor Use: Work, Projects, and Everyday Moments

Once it’s outside, you start to find ways to use it without trying.

For us, that’s meant everything from working outside for a bit to tackling small projects in the yard.

Running a drill or a saw while working on something simple is an easy example. It’s not about replacing a full workshop setup. It’s about having the flexibility to work where it makes sense in the moment.

That’s the theme that keeps coming up with this. It’s not about pushing it to extremes. It’s about making everyday things easier.

Even just sitting outside with a laptop, having power without needing to run cords or stay close to the house, makes a difference.

Who This Is Actually For

This kind of setup isn’t for everyone, but it’s a good fit for more people than you might expect.

If you want backup power but don’t want to deal with a complicated system, this makes sense.

If you spend time outside, but not in a hardcore off-grid way, it fits there too.

If you like the idea of something that works both at home and outside without needing to think about it, that’s where it really stands out.

It’s less about a specific use case and more about flexibility.

What Stood Out to Us

The biggest thing is how easy it is to move.

That might not sound like the most important feature at first, but in practice, it’s what changes how often you use it.

The capacity also feels practical, not limiting. You’re not constantly thinking about what you can or can’t plug in or how long it might be able to last before needing to recharge it.

And overall, it fits into daily life in a way that feels natural. It doesn’t demand attention. It just works when you need it.

Final Thoughts: Where This Fits in Our Life Now

We originally thought of this as a backup solution.

Something we’d use when the power went out, and maybe not much beyond that.

That’s not how it’s played out.

It’s become something we used more often than we expected, both inside the house and outside.

Part of that is the capacity. Part of it is the simplicity. But a lot of it comes down to the fact that it moves with us.

It doesn’t stay in one place. And because of that, it ends up being useful in more places than we planned.

If you’re looking for something that works at home and doesn’t stay stuck there, you can take a closer look at the BLUETTI Elite 400 here.

There’s a particular kind of dread that sets in when you wake up to winter weather, check the forecast, and see the words freezing rain buried in the afternoon outlook.

If you live in the mountains of British Columbia as we do, you already know what that can mean: downed power lines, flickering lights, and the quiet anxiety of wondering whether today is the day the grid decides to take a break.

We live where six inches of snow in a single day is just a Tuesday. We have ski hills nearby, outdoor rinks the kids love, and the kind of winters where shovelling snow starts to feel like an Olympic sport. It’s beautiful. It’s also completely unpredictable when it comes to staying powered up.

That’s what led us to the BLUETTI Elite 200 V2, a portable power station we’ve run through its paces over the course of a full winter workday, indoors and out. Here’s exactly what we found.

Why Canadian Winters Make Power Reliability a Real Conversation

Power outages in Canada aren’t a fringe event.

Ice storms, heavy snowfall, and extreme cold put serious strain on aging grid infrastructure, and in rural and mountain communities especially, even a moderate weather event can knock power out for hours. Sometimes longer.

For a household running a home-based business, with multiple people working remotely, devices constantly in use, and deadlines that don’t care about the weather, losing power isn’t just an inconvenience. It’s a real disruption to how we make a living.

We’d been making do with a patchwork of backup batteries and power bars for years. What we wanted was something that could carry the whole household through a serious stretch without requiring us to triage which devices actually mattered. The Elite 200 V2 looked like it might finally be that solution.

Ready to stop worrying about winter outages? Check out the BLUETTI Elite 200 V2 | Use code BFN for 5% off sitewide.

What We’re Actually Running Off It

Let’s get specific, because the honest answer to “can it handle a family workday?” depends entirely on what that workday actually looks like.

On a typical day, we run two laptops, a tablet, several phones charging throughout the day, a portable Bluetooth speaker, and a small lamp or two when we’ve moved to different parts of the house. On heavier days, a kettle or a small fan joins the mix.

The BLUETTI Elite 200 V2 brings 2,073Wh of capacity and 2,600W of AC output to that equation, with the ability to power up to nine devices simultaneously through its four AC outlets, two USB-C ports (100W each), and two USB-A ports. In practical terms, that means we never had to think about what to plug in and what to leave out. Everything ran, all at once, without the station so much as flinching.

For context, the Elite 200 V2 can sustain devices up to 2,600W, and with its Hercules mode activated through the BLUETTI app, it can handle heating devices up to 3,900W. We didn’t push it that far on our typical day, but knowing that headroom exists matters when you’re thinking about real backup scenarios.

Taking It Outside: A Few Hours of Fresh Air Without Losing a Step

This is the part that genuinely surprised us.

Somewhere around midday, when cabin fever starts setting in and the sun finally shows up through the clouds, we decided to put the Elite 200 V2 through its paces in a real-world outdoor environment. We made our way into the nearby forest with just the station, the 200W BLUETTI solar panel, and a picnic table among the trees.

We were lucky, it wasn’t snowing, but there was a real chill to the air in February.

We set everything up, got the laptop running, and then did something we don’t do often enough in the middle of a workday: we boiled water for hot chocolate.

Right there in the forest, mugs in hand, chill in the air, trees all around us. The Elite 200 V2 handled the kettle without blinking, and we sat there for a few minutes just taking it in before getting back to work. It sounds like a small thing, but it’s the kind of moment that makes you realize how much the right gear quietly changes what your day can look like.

There’s something grounding about working in the woods. The quiet. The cold air. The way the light comes through the trees in winter.

And the fact that we could do all of it, work, make a hot drink, charge everything we brought, without sacrificing a single productive hour, made it feel less like a test and more like a genuine shift in how we think about where work can happen.

The display on the station gave us real-time feedback on how much power we were pulling and how much the solar was putting back in, genuinely useful information that made the whole thing feel less like gear and more like infrastructure.

The unit weighs just over 53 pounds, which is substantial. This isn’t something you’re going to toss in a backpack. But it has two integrated handles and a form factor compact enough that moving it from inside to a forest clearing is a manageable one-person job. We did it without it becoming a chore.

The Elite 200 V2 is rated to operate in temperatures as low as -20°C, which covers the range of what we deal with in BC. Even on a cold morning, it performed without issue.

When the Grid Goes Down: What You’re Actually Working With

We want to be straightforward here: the power didn’t go out during our time with the Elite 200 V2. However, we’ve lived in these mountains long enough to know that at some point it will. After having spent a full day running everything we typically do in a normal work day through this station, we now have a very clear picture of what an outage scenario looks like.

Based on the way we typically use power, two laptops, phones, lighting, the occasional small appliance, the Elite 200 V2’s 2,073Wh capacity would carry us comfortably through the better part of a full workday without any solar input at all. Add the 200W solar panel on a clear winter day, and you’re meaningfully extending that window further.

What changes when you own something like this isn’t just your power backup situation. It’s your relationship to the forecast. Instead of watching storm warnings with low-grade anxiety, you start watching them with something closer to calm. The station is charged. The solar panel is ready. Whatever comes, the laptops stay on.

Don’t wait for the next outage to wish you’d prepared. Get the BLUETTI Elite 200 V2 | Use code BFN for 5% off sitewide.

What We Like, and What to Know Before You Buy

We’d be doing you a disservice if we just listed everything that impressed us without giving you the full picture, so here’s both.

What genuinely impressed us

The capacity is the obvious headline. 2073Wh is a serious amount of power in a relatively compact unit, and BLUETTI’s use of automotive-grade LiFePO4 cells means the Elite 200 V2 is rated for 6,000+ charging cycles. That works out to roughly 17 years of daily use before the battery degrades to 80% of its original capacity. That’s not a spec you usually see at this price point.

The BLUETTI app is genuinely useful, with real-time monitoring, energy-saving settings, solar charging controls, and a clean interface that doesn’t require a manual to navigate. The fan is notably quiet indoors, which matters when you’re working in the same room as it. And the pass-through charging works well, meaning you can use the station while it charges from the wall or from solar without it missing a beat. It also doesn’t rely on an annoying power brick to charge it via the wall which is always one of our pet peeves with some models.

What to know going in

At 53.4 pounds, this isn’t a lightweight unit. It’s very moveable, but it’s not effortless. Budget for that. It also doesn’t have a built-in light, which some competing units now offer. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing if you’re imagining using it in a dark outage scenario. It also isn’t expandable with additional battery modules or completely waterproof (though it is water resistant like most similarly sized units), so if either of those features matters to you, that should factor into your decision.

Is It Worth It?

For a household that works from home, lives somewhere that winter weather is a genuine variable, and wants one system that handles everything without requiring triage or expensive compromise, then yes, the BLUETTI Elite 200 V2 is worth it. Couple in the double duty you can get with summer camping, backyard picnics, outdoor jobsites or extended roadtrips and that helps offsets any costs you might be questioning because any unit this size isn’t cheap.

However, when you factor in the 17-year battery lifespan, the peace of mind during storm season, and the flexibility to take your power source with you rather than always chasing an outlet, the math starts to look different. This is the kind of gear that earns its place not by being flashy, but by simply working. Reliably, repeatedly, and without drama for years on end.

If you’ve had even one winter where you wished you had battery backup, from a cost to convenience question, this is the answer we’d point you toward.

We’ve tested and used a lot of power stations over the years. Big ones. Heavy ones. Ones with impressive specs that look great on paper.

And what we’ve learned is simple. The best power station isn’t the most powerful one. It’s the one you actually reach for.

That’s exactly why we’re using the Bluetti Elite 30 V2 right now. Not because it does everything. It doesn’t. But because it’s easy. It’s portable. It’s simple enough that it becomes part of daily life instead of something you save for special situations.

We see the same thing with cameras. We own a DSLR and know how to use it. But we use our smartphone cameras ninety nine percent of the time. Not because they’re better cameras, but because they’re already on us. Handy. Ready when the moment happens.

Power works the same way. If it’s easy to grab and easy to use, it gets used.

Curious? See Bluetti Elite 30 V2 prices now.

Capability doesn’t matter if it never leaves the shelf

On paper, bigger power stations are impressive. Higher output. Bigger batteries. More ports. More everything.

In real life, those same power stations tend to live in one place. They’re heavy enough that moving them feels like a task. They’re bulky enough that you think twice before relocating them. So they stay put, often in a garage or storage room, technically available but not actually part of daily life.

What we’ve noticed is simple. When something is awkward to move, you stop moving it. And when you stop moving it, you stop using it except in very specific situations.

That’s not a failure of the product. It’s just how people behave.

How portability changes behavior at home

A small, easy to carry power station behaves differently.

cat approved

It doesn’t live in one room. It follows you.

One day it’s under a desk charging a laptop while someone works at the kitchen table. Later it’s in the living room powering a small lamp when it gets dark early. That evening it might be upstairs keeping a phone and an eReader topped up without unplugging anything else.

Because it’s easy to pick up, it moves. And because it moves, it gets used.

That’s the quiet advantage of a compact unit like the Elite 30 V2. Not raw power. Not specs. Just the fact that it fits naturally into normal life.

Ease of use matters as much as weight

Portability isn’t only about how heavy something is. It’s also about how much thinking it requires.

If using a power station feels like a process, you’ll avoid it. If it feels obvious, you’ll reach for it.

We notice this in the small moments. Charging a Fitbit while making dinner. Plugging in earbuds without hunting for a free outlet. Dropping a laptop plug into the nearest port without rearranging furniture.

None of those moments feel important on their own. Added together, they’re the reason a product earns a place in daily life.

Specs and features, without the noise

Before going further, it helps to ground this in what the Elite 30 V2 actually is.

This is a compact portable power station with a 288 Wh LiFePO4 battery. That battery chemistry matters because it’s stable and built for long life, typically thousands of cycles before noticeable capacity loss.

It delivers up to 600 watts of continuous AC output using a pure sine wave inverter, with higher surge capacity for short spikes. In everyday terms, that means it comfortably runs and charges small household items and electronics without stress.

Port wise, it’s well equipped for modern devices. There are AC outlets for standard plugs, high power USB C ports capable of fast charging laptops, additional USB A ports for smaller devices, and 12 V DC outputs for things like lights or travel gear.

One feature we really appreciate is built in UPS functionality. If you have it plugged into the wall with devices connected, it can switch to battery power during a brief outage fast enough that sensitive electronics keep running without rebooting.

Charging options are flexible. You can charge it from a wall outlet, from a car, or from a solar panel. To match it’s portable size, it supports foldable solar panels like the BLUETTI SORA 60 well for topping up when you’re outside or on the road.

It also includes app support over Bluetooth and WiFi, which lets you monitor charge levels, outputs, and settings from your phone. You don’t have to use the app, but it’s there if you want more visibility.

All of this comes in a package that’s compact and light enough to carry easily with one hand. And that detail matters more than it sounds.

Why this mindset comes from travel

Long term travel trains you to value things that adapt. You learn quickly which gear earns its place and which gear becomes dead weight.

Anything that demands planning, setup, or optimization gets old fast. What you end up preferring are tools that work wherever you are, without fuss.

That mindset doesn’t disappear when you come home. You still gravitate toward things that move easily, work reliably, and don’t demand attention.

Why this extends naturally to day trips and overnights

The same logic applies outside the house.

We’re not talking about elaborate camping setups or off grid living. We mean real life trips. A drive. A park. A night or two away. The kinds of trips that happen because the weather’s decent and everyone feels like getting out of the house.

When a power station is small and easy, you don’t debate bringing it. You just grab it and go.

Phones get charged. A laptop stays topped up. Portable gaming systems keep running. Camera batteries don’t die halfway through the day. You’re not building a system. You’re just bringing along an option.

A picnic is where this really shows up

One of the clearest examples for us is a simple day in the park.

Nothing staged. Crisp air. People wandering around. Normal day energy.

The power station sits on the picnic table. A phone is charging.

Nearby, a foldable solar panel is unfolded and plugged in.

It isn’t perfectly angled. It isn’t optimized. It’s just there, extending the day a little while everything else happens.

Solar that’s easy enough to bother with actually gets used

Solar often falls apart for people not because it doesn’t work, but because it feels like work.

The appeal of a small foldable panel line the BLUETTI SORA 60 is the same as the appeal of a small power station. It’s light. It folds up. You can carry it without thinking about it. You can put it out for an hour and pack it away.

You’re not trying to run everything on solar. You’re just topping up. Stretching your power a bit. Keeping things ready.

Because it doesn’t feel like a project, you actually use it.

Solar Panel Specs and Features for the BLUETTI SORA 60 Solar Panel

We pair the power station with the BLUETTI SORA 60 Solar Panel, which adds flexibility when we’re outside or away from outlets. Like the power station itself, the appeal here isn’t maximum output. It’s ease of use. This is solar you actually bother to bring along.

The BLUETTI SORA 60 Solar Panel is rated at 60 watts. That’s enough to meaningfully top up a compact power station like the Elite 30 V2 during daylight hours, especially for maintaining charge rather than trying to run everything purely on solar.

The panel uses monocrystalline solar cells with high efficiency, which helps it make better use of available sunlight even when conditions aren’t perfect. The surface is laminated with ETFE, a durable material designed to handle regular outdoor use and the backside has a nice aesthetic fabric look.

In terms of size and weight, this panel stays firmly in the portable category. It weighs just over three pounds and folds down small enough to carry one handed or toss in the car without thinking about it. Unfolded, it’s large enough to capture useful sunlight. Folded, it stores easily without becoming another bulky item to manage.

The BLUETTI SORA 60 Solar Panel is also splash resistant, which makes it suitable for normal outdoor conditions like picnics, rest stops, or campsites without needing special protection.

In real use, this 60W panel isn’t about powering everything all day or charging up behemoth power stations. It’s about extending your power. You unfold it, plug it in, and let it quietly do its thing whether you’re directly topping up your phone or laptop with it’s built in USB ports or topping up something of a reasonable size such as the Bluetti Elite 30 power station above.

Because it’s light, foldable, and simple, it fits the same philosophy as the power station itself. Solar that’s easy enough to bother with is solar that actually gets used.

Small trips tell the truth about gear

Big trips hide inconvenience. Small trips expose it.

If something feels annoying on a picnic or an overnight, it probably doesn’t belong in your life. If it fits in without effort, that’s a sign it earned its place.

How to think about choosing a power station

This isn’t a buyer’s guide. It’s a mindset shift.

Instead of asking how much power you could have, ask what you’ll actually pick up. What you’ll move. What you’ll bring along without debating whether it’s worth it.

Enough power that you use beats more power that you don’t.

Closing thought

The best power station isn’t the biggest one. It’s the one that fits into everyday life and spontaneous travel without friction.

The one you’ll actually pick up and use.

After more than 20 years on the road, here’s something we’ve learned the slow and sometimes uncomfortable way. Most travel gear sounds great in theory however very little of it earns a permanent spot in your bag.

We’ve dragged gear across continents, stuffed it into overhead bins, hauled it through border crossings, forgotten it in rental cars, and learned quickly what’s worth carrying and what quietly gets left behind on the next trip.

This guide isn’t about shiny gadgets or trends. It’s about the things that make travel easier, calmer, and a whole lot more comfortable, whether you’re heading out for a weekend road trip or crossing oceans for months at a time.

These are the travel essentials we actually use. Some are about comfort. Some are about reducing stress. Some are about avoiding those tiny travel annoyances that pile up fast. All of them have earned their place.

Portable Power That Actually Changes How You Travel

Bluetti Elite 100 V2 and PV100L solar panel

This power combo has become one of our favorite additions for outdoor days, picnics, and casual camping. The Elite 100 V2 is compact enough to throw in the car but powerful enough to run lights, charge phones, power laptops, and keep small appliances going without anxiety. Pair it with the PV100L solar panel and you’ve got a surprisingly flexible setup.

What we love most is how low effort it feels. Set up the panel, let it sip sunlight, and suddenly you’re not hunting for outlets or rationing battery life. It’s perfect for picnic days that turn into sunset hangs, campground mornings, or even just peace of mind during power outages at home.

It’s not overkill. It’s just solid, quiet reliability.

The One Car Accessory That Actually Reduces Stress

Gooloo GP4000 jump starter

If you’ve ever turned the key in a cold parking lot and heard nothing, you already understand why this lives in our car.

The GP4000 isn’t just a jump starter. It’s a stress remover. No waiting for roadside assistance. No awkwardly asking strangers for cables. Just pull it out, hook it up, and get on with your day.

We especially love it for road trips, winter travel, and long stretches where cell service isn’t guaranteed. It’s one of those things you hope you never need, and then you’re incredibly grateful when you do.

Real Comfort for Long Travel Days

Cabeau Evolution X neck pillow

We’ve tried a lot of neck pillows over the years. In fact, we have over a dozen at this point. Most end up shoved under a seat halfway through a flight and tossed into a closet when we return home to never see the light of day again.

The Cabeau Evolution X was different. It actually supports your head instead of just existing around your neck. It stays in place, doesn’t collapse, and makes long flights or car rides noticeably more comfortable. Our daughter now swears by it.

If you travel long haul even once a year, this one’s worth it.

Quiet, On Your Own Terms

Loop earplugs

Sometimes you don’t want silence. You just want less.

Loop earplugs are perfect for flights, noisy hotels, shared accommodations, too loud concerts or even just blocking out background noise while still hearing what matters. They’re comfortable, reusable, and don’t scream I am wearing earplugs.

They’ve saved our sanity more times than we can count and the whole family owns a pair.

Power That Keeps Up With You

A reliable USB power bank

This is basic, but essential. Phones are boarding passes, maps, cameras, translators, and lifelines. A good power bank means you stop worrying about battery percentages and start focusing on the experience.

We always travel with at least one solid, fast charging power bank (often 2 or 3). It’s one of those items you’ll use constantly without thinking about it. Make sure you include a few extra charging cables too in case your main one decides it never wants to go back home.

Language Help Without the Awkwardness

Timekettle W4 AI Interpreter earbuds

These are one of those tools that quietly remove friction. Whether you’re checking into a hotel, ordering food, or asking a simple question, real time translation can turn a moment of anxiety into a smooth interaction.

The W4 earbuds are surprisingly natural to use. You don’t feel like you’re holding a device between you and another person. Conversations flow more easily, and that matters when you’re navigating a new place.

They don’t replace learning the basics of a language, but they absolutely lower the barrier to connection.

One Adapter to Rule Them All

Universal travel adapter

There’s nothing fun about arriving somewhere late and realizing you can’t plug anything in, including your phone.

A universal travel adapter that works across countries is non negotiable for international travel. The good ones are compact, handle multiple devices, can even charge your phone directly and eliminate the need to pack a bag of random plugs.

It’s simple. It works. You forget about it, which is exactly the point. Just realize they’re adapters and not converters so make sure your device can handle different voltages before plugging anything in.

The Day Bag You’ll Use Everywhere

Lightweight foldable backpack

This might be one of the most underrated travel items. A small foldable compact backpack takes up almost no space but becomes invaluable once you’re on the ground.

Perfect for groceries, beach days, hikes, city wandering, and souvenirs you definitely didn’t plan to buy. We keep one in our bag on every trip.

Organization That Saves Time and Energy

Packing cubes

Packing cubes aren’t about being fancy. They’re about knowing exactly where your stuff is.

Clean clothes stay clean. Dirty clothes stay separate. You unpack faster and repack even faster. When you’re moving often, that mental relief adds up.

Once you use them, you don’t go back. Here’s why you should use packing cubes.

Avoiding the Airport Surprise Fee

Small luggage scale

Some countries and airlines take weight limits very seriously. A compact luggage scale lets you know where you stand before you’re at the counter, stressed and reshuffling your bag in public.

It’s small, lightweight, and can save you real money. We don’t take it on every journey but when we know weight matters, we toss one into our bag.

Final Thoughts

Travel gets better when the little things work. When power is easy. When comfort is handled. When stress is reduced instead of added.

This guide isn’t about owning more stuff. It’s about owning the right stuff. The small pieces that quietly support the kind of travel you actually want to do.

After two decades of learning the hard way, these are items we trust. And if they’ve earned a permanent place in our bags, they’ve earned a place on this list.

Road trip stress usually comes from small, preventable moments. After cold Canadian winters and dead batteries at the worst times, we learned that one simple car item can quietly remove a lot of worry. This is why the GP4000 now lives in our car.

Why the GOOLOO GP4000 car battery jump starter is the best gift for Christmas this year

Over the years, we’ve learned that most road trip stress doesn’t come from big disasters. It comes from small, preventable moments that derail the day.

Living in Canada teaches you that quickly. We’ve driven through the prairies in the dead of winter, parked overnight in -35 degrees with no block heater and no guarantee the car would start in the morning. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn’t. When you’re visiting family, staying somewhere unfamiliar, or parked on the street with no plug in sight, that uncertainty sticks with you.

We’ve also had the quieter version of the same problem. We flew out of town for a week, came home tired, luggage in hand, ready to get back into routine, and the car wouldn’t start. Suddenly the options were asking around for jumper cables, waiting for roadside assistance, or dealing with a battery replacement right then and there. None of those felt great in that moment.

That’s when it really clicked for us. Prepared doesn’t have to mean complicated. Sometimes it’s just having one simple thing nearby that lets you handle the basics on your own time.

This is one of those things.

Get the GOOLOO GP4000 on Amazon now.

Why This Earned A Permanent Spot In Our Car

We didn’t add the GOOLOO GP4000 jump starter to our car because we expected something to go wrong. We added it because over time, we realized how often small inconveniences can turn into big delays when you’re driving.

Car batteries don’t always give you a warning. Cold weather, short trips, parasitic battery drains, leaving a vehicle parked for a stretch, running the radio too long at a drive-in movie theater or just a battery reaching the end of its life can all lead to the same unpleasant outcome. The car won’t start when you need it to.

Having a compact jump starter on hand removes an entire category of stress. You’re not scrambling for help or rearranging your day around someone else’s availability. You can just deal with it and move on.

That alone makes it worth keeping in the car full time.

It’s Not Just For Road Trips

What surprised us most is how often we use it around town, not just on longer drives.

We’ve used a charger to top up phones while parked. Used the flashlight to help us see things we’ve dropped on the floor of our car. We’ve kept it nearby during busy errand days. It’s one of those tools that quietly becomes useful in ways you didn’t originally plan for.

That flexibility matters. We don’t want something that only earns its place once a year. We want things that fit into everyday life and travel naturally.

The GOOLOO GP4000 does that without feeling like bulky car gear.

What Comes In The Box And Why That Matters

One of the reasons this felt approachable right away is that everything you need comes in the box.

The unit itself is compact and solid. It comes with a sturdy, good-looking carrying case that keeps everything organized and easy to store. There’s a truly helpful manual that tells you how to use the unit. The cables and clamps are clearly labeled in the manual, and nothing feels overly technical or intimidating.

You don’t have to hunt for extra accessories or figure out what goes with what. That clarity makes a difference, especially if you’re dealing with a dead battery and just want things to be straightforward.

When something is simple to understand, you’re more likely to actually use it.

Battery capacity of 88.8Wh

USB-C input rated at 15W (5V/3A)

USB-C output rated at 15W (5V/3A)

The Part That Made This Feel Manageable

If you’ve ever used traditional jumper cables, you know they can feel a bit stressful. You need another vehicle, you need to position cars correctly, you need to hope that connecting it to the other car won’t fry it’s circuits and there’s always that moment of double checking you’ve connected everything the right way.

What we liked about the GP4000 is how self contained the process is. The instructions are clear. The ports are easy to identify. You’re not relying on someone else being available or comfortable pooping their hood and helping out you out.

Seeing the instructions laid out next to the unit made it obvious how much less intimidating this is than the old jumper cable routine. It’s designed for normal people, not car experts.

That alone lowers the barrier to actually using it when the time comes.

When You Actually Need It

Dead batteries happen in all kinds of situations. Sometimes you’re far from home. Sometimes you’re in your own driveway. Either way, they tend to show up when you least feel like dealing with them.

Having a jump starter on hand means you’re not stuck waiting. You can get the car running, then decide what to do next on your own schedule. That might mean heading straight to get the battery checked or just getting home and dealing with it later.

That sense of control is underrated. It turns an annoying situation into a manageable one.

Why This Makes A Genuinely Good Gift

This is the kind of gift people don’t always buy for themselves. Not because it isn’t useful, but because it’s easy to put off until something goes wrong.

That’s why it works so well as a gift. It’s practical without being boring. Thoughtful without being over the top. And it’s something that keeps paying off long after the holidays are over.

For anyone who drives regularly, takes road trips, lives in colder climates, or just likes knowing they can handle the basics themselves, it’s a solid choice.

A Quieter Kind Of Preparedness

We’ve learned over the years that travel feels better when fewer things can derail the day. Prepared doesn’t have to mean anxious or overplanned. It can be calm. It can be simple.

Keeping a jump starter in the car is one of those small decisions that quietly adds up to easier travel days, whether you’re heading out on a road trip or just running errands around town.

It’s not something you think about often. And that’s kind of the point.

Fall in Kelowna can’t quite make up its mind.

One day it’s crisp and cool, with mist hanging over Okanagan Lake, and the next it’s warm enough for shorts and an iced coffee on a patio.

It’s a season made for layers and for testing the kind of clothing that can handle anything the weather throws at it.

Last week, we decided to spend a few days outdoors closer to home.

One day, Charles and I headed for a walk along the Mission Creek Greenway, where the fall salmon run is in full swing. The water shimmered with flashes of red as the fish fought their way upstream. The bears were out too, taking advantage of the season’s feast, so we stayed alert while enjoying the trail’s mix of forest shade and open sun.

The next day, we took the quieter route and wandered down to the local park with a warm drink, watching local seniors walk their dogs and the fall leaves drift across the grass.

Our Fall Gear Test

For these little adventures, we both wore pieces from KUHL that have quickly earned a spot in our regular rotation:

Micki: Women’s The One Hoody, Size XL, Raven

Charles: Men’s Renegade Cargo Short, Grey

The One Hoody

This jacket has been my favorite companion for those unpredictable Kelowna fall days.

It’s soft on the inside, almost sweatshirt cozy, but surprisingly lightweight. It keeps the chill off during early morning lake walks without ever feeling heavy. The fabric sheds light rain and wind, and it looks good enough to wear from trail to café without a second thought.

It features comfortable pockets with a nice full hood that keeps the rain off my face and the cool fall air away on those days I need to draw it up.

Cozy Fall Mornings in Kelowna

As the season shifts, Kelowna feels especially alive. Salmon fight the current, bears get ready for winter, and trees light up in shades of red and gold.

Days like this remind us why we love living here and why good gear matters.

Whether it’s a lightweight jacket that keeps out the breeze or shorts that can take you from the trail to town, a few versatile pieces make it easy to enjoy every part of fall’s unpredictable charm.

We’ve been confused in airports, baffled in pharmacies, and awkwardly guessing our way through conversations with amazing guides. So we were curious. Could the TimeKettle W4 Interpreter earbuds have made those moments smoother? Here’s what we found when we tried them ourselves.

The post The Tiny Travel Gadget That Could Have Saved Us Years of Airport Chaos first appeared on The Barefoot Nomad.

After more than twenty years of travel across forty plus countries, we’ve learned that communication problems aren’t rare. They’re almost guaranteed.

From misheard announcements to medical surprises to long conversations with guides, the moments where language matters tend to show up when you’re tired, hungry, or juggling kids.

Travel Tech Review: One Smart Pair of Earbuds That Fixed Some of Our Biggest Trip Headaches

So when we tested the TimeKettle W4 AI Interpreter earbuds, we wanted to see if they could actually help with the real situations we’ve dealt with again and again.

Not just cool tech on paper, but something that would have changed past trips for the better.

Turns out they did, in a few important ways. And, like anything, they have limits. This is our honest take.

Language Trouble at Airports

Some of our most confusing travel days have happened in airports where English announcements were either rare or wrapped in static. We’ve stared at departure boards in Taipei while everyone around us seemed to understand an announcement we completely missed.

We’ve tried to follow gate changes in Milan while updates slipped by too fast. We’ve waited at tiny airports in Kos, Greece and in the Galapagos where the only clear thing was that we were not clear at all.

How the W4 Helps

With one earbud in your ear you hear real time translation without handing your phone to a stranger. You speak normally, the staff reply normally, and the translation quietly fills in the gaps. During our Spanish to English tests, the speed was fast enough that it felt like we finally had a secret advantage.

The earbuds are comfortable enough to keep in for long stretches of airport wandering and we were able to wear one for hours with no discomfort.

Medical Situations on the Road

Medical trouble on a trip is stressful even without a language gap. I once spent three days in a Thai hospital with a kidney infection. The staff were kind, but almost everyone spoke only Thai, and every simple question turned into a puzzle.

And then there was the time in Greece when our son took a tumble and needed stitches in his ear. Trying to communicate clearly while holding a scared kid is not a moment where you want to guess.

How the W4 Helps

In one earbud mode you speak naturally and the W4 plays the translation out loud for the pharmacist or clinician. When they respond, their reply translates right into your ear. Everyday medical language worked well in our tests. Technical terminology was less consistent, so simple phrasing is still best.

A factual note for anyone considering them. The earbuds work through the TimeKettle app on your phone. Battery life lasts several hours of active translation before you will want to recharge. The charging case extends overall use time, which helps on long days out.

Long Conversations with Tour Guides

Some of our favourite experiences have come from spending real time with guides who share their culture. Our private tour in Morocco with the kids is still one of those memories we talk about often. We rode camels, wandered through desert sands, and chatted about everything from school life to food.

For these kinds of experiences, the two earbud mode finally makes sense. You have rapport. You trust each other. You are already talking. Offering an earbud feels natural.

How the W4 Helps

Both people wear one earbud each and both sides hear real time translations. We tested this with a friend playing the role of a guide, and the conversation felt surprisingly smooth. We talked for about fifteen minutes with barely any pause. Strong accents or slang sometimes needed a rephrase, but overall it felt like a genuine back and forth rather than a stop and wait translation moment.

What the Earbuds Are Like in Real Use

Here is what stood out in day to day use. The earbuds are very comfortable. The semi in ear style means no pressure points, even after long use. Translation speed is fast and everyday accuracy is high. Setup is simple with the TimeKettle app handling everything.

They can also be used for daily phone calls, which is a nice perk. Music playback works but is not the highlight of the earbuds. They are built for conversation first. Translation accuracy may dip with strong accents or when using highly technical vocabulary.

One of the best perks is the lifetime upgrade model. Pay once, no subscriptions, no recurring fees. You buy the earbuds and the languages, and you get updates for life. In a world full of subscription fatigue, this feels refreshing.

About the TimeKettle W4 AI Interpreter Earbuds

The W4 earbuds support 43 languages and 96 accents. They use both bone conduction sensing and dual microphones to capture speech clearly in busy environments. They offer real time simultaneous interpretation in multiple modes including one earbud translation, two earbud shared conversation, and offline translation for select languages.

They also work as regular Bluetooth earbuds for calls and music. The companion TimeKettle app is required for translation and provides language downloads, updates, and all configuration settings. The charging case boosts total active time and keeps the earbuds protected while you travel.

If you want smoother travel days, fewer confused airport moments, clearer medical interactions, and deeper conversations with guides and locals, these earbuds genuinely help. They are not perfect, but they make a noticeable difference in the real situations we face on the road.

We review the picnic perfect Bluetti Elite 100 V2 portable power station and see why it pairs nicely with the folding Bluetti PV100L 100W solar panel.

The post A Review Of The Picnic Perfect Bluetti Elite 100 V2 first appeared on The Barefoot Nomad.

If the Marvel universe ever needed a modestly sized but surprisingly mighty power bank, the Bluetti Elite 100 V2 would be the one auditioning. Not the cape wearing hero, but the reliable sidekick who quietly fixes everything while you are still trying to remember where you packed the instant coffee.

Our hands on take, complete with picnic table solar charging

For this review, we spent a few days testing out the Bluetti Elite 100 V2 Portable Power Station at home then brought it to a local picnic spot complete with the attractive Bluetti PV100L 100W folding solar panel to see how they fared together. Yes, we took way too many photos. Yes, most of them involved snacks. That is the Barefoot Nomad life in a nutshell. Accept it.

First impressions

The Bluetti Elite 100 V2 is sturdy, compact, and has that rugged little robot vibe. Imagine a square R2D2, but if R2 could run your laptop, keep your camera topped up, charge a drone, and still have power left over for fueling your teenager’s emergency social media needs. It feels solid in your hand without being a pain to carry, and it tucks easily into your vehicle trunk when on the go or in the corner of your tent if you’re in the woods for the weekend.

Interested in the Bluetti Elite 100 portable power station? Grab it directly from Bluetti using our “BFN” promo code until December 2, 2025 to get an additional 5% off the already great Black Friday pricing. In Canada, go to Bluetti.ca and if in the USA then grab it from Bluetti.com

What we powered

Between the two of us and the kids, we plugged in everything we could find. Phones, tablets, a camera battery, a portable speaker, and a laptop. The Bluetti Elite 100 V2 handled it all without complaint. Some power banks panic when you ask too much of them. This one acted like we had barely asked anything at all.

Perfect for travel

If you camp, road trip, work outdoors, or just like having backup power for life’s unexpected moments, this little unit fits right in. It’s quiet. It’s dependable. It never tries to steal your snacks. Honestly, it might be the most well behaved member of the family.

Bluetooth connected

Is there anything that isn’t Bluetooth connected these days? Actually, lots of power stations aren’t and it’s definitely one place Bluetti shines. You can grab the Bluetti app from either Apple and Google that lets you connect to the device and monitor everything from how much energy you’re currently using to enabling and disabling the ports remotely. Morning coffee brewing with the touch of a button from the comfort of my sleeping bag? Yes please!

Unlike other brands, it even allows firmware updates to the device so if enhancements or tweaks are discovered down the line, it’s 2 taps away from happening. With UPS capabilities, you can even set the power bank to different modes so you never lose a document when plugged into the device whether at home or at the jobsite.

Plenty of charging options

Its 1200W input and crazy short charging speed (it can reach around 80% from zero in 45 mins when plugged in) is impressive. Watching the percentage climb feels strangely satisfying and it immediately makes you wonder why your phone can’t get its act together and charge at the same pace.

It can also handle up to 1000W via solar input which also means if you’re running a small solar array, this power station will be your best friend. Of course it can also take in your typical 12 volt car plug but we never tested it ourselves as this model didn’t come with that plug. (Luckily we have others from Bluetti models we’ve reviewed in the past but they’re cheap to buy if you don’t have one.)

A pile of ports

Whether you’re charging via AC, DC or the nearly ubiquitous USB, the picnic perfect Bluetti Elite V2 has you covered. With 4 AC ports accepting a maximum of 1800W of pure sine power (with peak power reaching up to 2700W for those pesky motor startups), you can run a blender, a hair dryer or even a microwave if you were so inclined. It also means it can power that air inflator with ease if you’re pumping up that glorious floating island you’ve always dreamed about.

With everything from laptops to monitors running via USB C these days, you can rest assured that it’s 2 USB C ports (one is 140W and the other 100W) means you can leave your laptop charge brick at home and just connect it directly to the Bluetti. Of course, you can plug your older, more boring USB devices into the 2 more traditional USB A ports the device carries so bring your fairy lights, battery powered speakers and rechargeable lantern as well and don’t fret about conserving their power on your next camping trip. Light it up baby!

If you’re a diehard camper and have a portable powered cooler (we know you’re thinking about one, who isn’t?), the Bluetti Elite 100 V2 can handle that too with your traditional 12V lighter style plug as well as the two DC5521 jacks. With 1,024Wh of battery juice, you can power one for days and if gone longer, grab a solar panel (or two) like the one below and extend your trip indefinitely.

Sun powered bliss on a picnic table

The Bluetti PV100L 100W folding solar panel was the Elite 100 V2’s perfect companion. We set up the weirdly attractive heather grey backed solar panel on a wooden picnic table with the kind of satisfaction usually reserved for building Lego. One moment it’s a nice little package, the next it unfolds into a miniature solar farm that looks very proud of itself.

Easy setup

Even on a slightly uneven picnic table, setup took less than a minute. Unclip, unfold, clip angle according to the sun, and it starts collecting power like a sun loving cat discovering a warm beam. No fuss and no need for instructions. The fact the solar panel includes a simple marked clip of different angles makes choosing your favorite angle as easy as a button. (Because it’s literally a button.)

How it performed

Fall clouds drifted in and out, but the panel still fed the Elite 100 V2 a steady stream of solar goodness once we put it in the sun. Paired together, they looked like a tiny outdoor command center while we relaxed with snacks and pretended to be very outdoorsy.

The panel handled dust, wet leaves, a curious puppy and a light breeze without issue. Even on the rough picnic table, the folding 100W panel felt solid. The built in cable (tucked nicely in it’s own waterproof zippered compartment), coupled with the Bluetti’s included power bank connector made the connection fast, easy and secure.

Bluetti PV100L 100W Solar Panel Final thoughts

If you want a reliable, lightweight solar setup for camping, picnics, road trips, or beach days, this panel delivers. It is sturdy, portable, and oddly satisfying to use. Plus, charging your gear with sunshine feels like a tiny magic trick every single time and the fact it does it for free means it will eventually pay for itself in savings. We liked it so much, we actually wish we had a pair of them.

Quick Buying Guide

Who the Bluetti Elite 100 V2 is for

Think of the Elite 100 V2 as the friend on a road trip who somehow packs light but still produces the laptop charger, the extra flashlight, and the backup snacks.

Choose it if you want:
• A mid sized power station that can handle laptops, camera gear, tablets, and a fridge or kettle for short bursts
• Long battery life thanks to LiFePO4 chemistry
• Very fast recharging from solar or AC
• App control, UPS backup, and strong charging flexibility
• A compact unit that works for both travel and home backup

Skip it if you want to run big home appliances for many hours at a time. For that you will want a larger capacity setup.

Who the Bluetti 100 W folding solar panel is for

Choose the 100 W panel if you want:
• A light, portable solar panel you can pop onto a picnic table or campsite
• Easy MC4 connections
• A simple and dependable way to recharge your Elite 100 V2 without hunting for outlets
• A compact panel that plays nicely with road trips and weekend camping

If you want to take full advantage of the Elite 100 V2’s high solar input, you may want two panels or a higher wattage option for a base camp or off grid cabin.

Best simple pairings

• Easy weekend setup
Elite 100 V2 plus one 100 W panel for phones, laptops, cameras, a small fridge, and general outdoor power.

• Faster solar refills
Elite 100 V2 plus two 100 W panels if you want the battery topped up most afternoons.

• Home backup starter kit
Elite 100 V2 plus one or two panels for routers, phones, laptops, and essential gear during short outages.

There’s something magical about curling up on a chilly morning with a mug of coffee, the cat snoring beside you, and a book that makes you feel like you’re somewhere far away. When the roads get icy and the adventures slow down, that’s when our travel daydreams seem to grow legs.

For us, winter is when the maps come back out and the next adventure starts taking shape, even if it’s only in our imaginations for now. A good travel book is more than an escape; it’s a reminder that the world is still out there waiting, full of stories and possibilities.

Whether you’re craving a slow armchair wander through Provence, an epic trek across Patagonia, or a little philosophical musing on why we wander in the first place, these ten books will keep your wanderlust alive long after the kettle’s gone cold.

If you love discovering thoughtful, wanderlust filled stories, this roundup pairs beautifully with these read suggestions for winter travel, which explore even more authors who know how to turn cold days into journeys of their own.

Why Stories Keep Travelers Going

When you can’t be on the road, reading about travel is the next best thing. It fills that quiet space between trips, rekindling our curiosity and courage. We’ve learned so much from other travelers’ stories, not just where to go, but how to be.

Books remind us that adventure isn’t just about plane tickets and passports. It’s about perspective. They help us navigate the unknowns, stay inspired, and remember why we fell in love with travel in the first place.

So consider this your cozy, book fueled itinerary for the season ahead, best enjoyed with wool socks, a good blanket, and a notebook for planning where you’ll go next.

Travel Books to Spark Your Wanderlust

The Snow Leopard by Peter Matthiessen is a meditative journey through the Himalayas that explores loss, beauty, and the art of paying attention. Quiet, contemplative, and perfect for cold weather reflection.

Tracks by Robyn Davidson is an unforgettable solo journey across the Australian desert with only camels for company. Raw, brave, and beautifully written, the kind of story that makes you want to do something bold.

The Art of Travel by Alain de Botton makes you rethink what it means to wander. Few books capture the soul of exploration like The Art of Travel, where De Botton dives into why we travel, how anticipation shapes experience, and what we really bring home with us after a trip. It’s a reminder that travel isn’t just about where you go but how you see.

A Year in Provence by Peter Mayle offers the perfect antidote to gray winter days. In A Year in Provence, he trades city life for the rhythms of a small French village, filling his days with long lunches, leaky roofs, and the joy of slowing down.

The Old Patagonian Express by Paul Theroux turns a train ride from Boston to Patagonia into a moving meditation on travel itself. It’s a reminder that the journey is often the real destination.

In Patagonia by Bruce Chatwin blends myth, mystery, and discovery through one of the world’s wildest landscapes. His writing is part travelogue, part legend, and pure adventure.

Wild by Cheryl Strayed follows a powerful path from grief to grit along the Pacific Crest Trail. You don’t need to hike thousands of miles to feel changed by this one.

On the Road by Jack Kerouac is a restless, poetic ode to freedom and youth that still captures the heartbeat of the open road. Best read when you’re feeling stuck and need a burst of courage to chase what’s next.

Vagabonding by Rolf Potts is a practical guide to long term travel that inspired a generation of nomads. It’s full of wisdom on how to make travel a lifestyle, not a vacation.

The Art of Stillness by Pico Iyer reminds us that the deepest journeys can happen without ever leaving home. It’s especially fitting for the quiet rhythm of winter.

How to Read Like a Traveler

Think of these books as stops along a single, meandering route. Switch between outward adventures and inner reflections to keep things balanced. Keep a notebook close, jot down the quotes that stir you, the destinations that call your name, and the lessons that stick.

By spring, your travel journal might already be full of plans, a shoulder season getaway, a train route to try, or maybe just a mindset shift toward slower, more intentional travel.

From Page to Passport

Reading about travel has a way of quietly reshaping how we see the world and how we plan our next trip. After A Year in Provence, maybe you’ll start lingering longer at the local market. After Tracks, you might take longer walks just to feel the edges of your endurance.

Literature, like travel itself, helps us edit our lives, trimming away the noise to make space for what lasts.

So this winter, while the snow piles up outside and the kettle goes cold, let a good travel story keep you warm. The world is not going anywhere, and when the thaw comes, you’ll be ready to meet it.

After years of push scooters, the Segway Ninebot E3 Pro delivers exactly what commuters need: 800W power, 40km range, and a peppy 32km/h top speed. With handlebar turn signals, four riding modes, and suspension that handles hills and gravel alike, it's the sweet spot between features and price. After 60km of testing, I'm convinced this is the best mid-sized electric scooter I've used.

What do you get after a few years of iterations, advancements in batteries and a near perfect track record of building personal electric riding devices? I’m not exactly sure but the Segway Ninebot E3 Pro electric scooter is a great step in the right direction.

Featuring an 800W Motor with a 40km range and 25km/h top speed (32 km/h in Sport Mode), the Ninebot E3 series is the perfect sized scooter for daily commutes and weekend cruises around town. It folds up for easier storage and includes enough bells and whistles to satisfy most RGB LED enthusiasts.

Canadians, you can get the Segway E3 Pro directly from Segway.

I’ve averaged over 10km each the half dozen times I’ve taken it out so far and every time I’ve realized that it’s likely the best mid size electric commuter scooter I’ve used so far.

Stay with me while I reminisce to the simpler push powered days of scooters and why electrics are so much more fun before I get into the review proper. Feel free to skip the next section for the review proper.

My Love of Scooters Backstory

Long before electric scooters were a thing and Lime, Bird and their rental fleet ilk were still a far off dream, our family were using push scooters to get around locally. When our oldest was not much older than a toddler, we bought him a scooter and I can vividly remember asking Micki if I should get one too.

Back then there weren’t many options but I eventually found an adult sized push one (that I still enjoy to this day) and we would often head out together. Car trips across the country would often include us throwing the scooters in the back and the amount of laps we’ve done in the nearby parks over the years would make a Nascar racer jealous.

A few years later Micki decided she wanted in on the action so we got another one. As our daughter got bigger, we bought her a small one and when both kids got older, we swapped theirs out for adult sized ones as well.

If you’re in Canada, get the Segway E3 Pro at BestBuy Canada and is also available directly from Segway.

Fast forward a few more years and electric scooters are everywhere. Now found in most North American and European cities, love them or hate them, the truth is they’re out there, they’re a great way to get around and much easier on the environment (and cheaper) than jumping in a Taxi or even taking an Uber.

While they’ve changed over the years, the Segway Ninebot series have always been considered a solid electric scooter. So, where does the current iteration stand? Let’s take the Segway Ninebot E3 Pro out and see how it fares.

Segway E3 Pro Electric Scooter Review

Receiving the large box the Segway E3 Pro scooter came in was surprising. A bit larger and heavier than I expected, I wasn’t sure how much assembly I would need to do. Luckily, as I opened the box, I quickly realized that Segway had put assembly instructions on everything from the box itself telling how to lift it out to nicely labelling every part it came with.

To be honest, there really wasn’t a lot to assemble. Basically just a few screws using the included 3 way hex key. Opening the box itself, the scooter was folded over and included a large velcro band securing everything together. Unfortunately, I was so excited to get it set up that I forgot to take a few pictures of the unpacking process…

That said, it literally comprised of pulling the scooter out, undoing the velcro strap, adjusting the steering then putting a few screws in. That’s it!

Segway E3 Pro Features

Standing back, I admired the flashing lights as I hit the power button.

Instantly you realize the Segway E3 Pro includes handlebar mounted turning lights, a bright brake light, a headlight, colored undermount deck LEDs plus a nice central speedometer with battery and mode indicator. There are even a few thoughtfully placed stickers telling you how to run the scooter if you just want to jump on and take it for a ride.

The Segway E3 Pro features 4 riding modes that you can switch between by double pressing the Power button. You can either do it while traveling or while the scooter is stationary. The nice and bright 3 inch display will switch between W, E, D or S so you’ll always know which mode you’re in.

Like most e-scooters, each mode has it’s own max speed and ride lengths. Essentially, the faster you go, the quicker your battery drains and the lower your max distance will be so if you’re hoping for a longer distance or, if your battery is draining quickly and you still have a ways to go, drop the mode down.

Walking mode: A slow max 6km/h (4mph) top speed designed to match a fast walking pace. (Perfect for riding next to a walking friend or spouse.)

Eco Mode: Max speed is 15km/h (10mph)and estimated ride lengths of up to 55 km (35 miles). This is the one if you’re driving through the park with a lot of people around or need to really extend your driving distance as it has by far the longest run times.

Default Mode: Max speed is 25km/h (16mph) and ride lengths of up to 40km (25 miles). This is the default mode and suits the E3 Pro just fine for most users who are comfortable on a scooter. Great for side streets and just fooling around.

Sport Mode: Max speed is 32km/h (20mph) and ride lengths of up to 25km (16 miles). This is the fastest mode and great for those riders who have a bit more experience or crave a bit more speed. Note that this could be higher than legal speed in some jurisdictions.

Most of my 10km+ rides have been in Sport mode and I’m usually left with around 60% battery when I return home however do note that I ride in a hilly city. My 25km/h 10km drive had over 75% remaining as I was taking it easy and keeping to somewhat flat areas so those numbers above don’t seem far off. Of course, these speeds and max distances will vary with rider weight (max 120kg or 260lbs), driving style and terrain so your own mileage may differ.

The bonus is that the E3 Pro rolls decently even when power is off so pushing it home if you exceeded your range is doable. (I went up and down my street testing it out and was surprised how well it pushed like this.)

Segway E3 Pro On Road Tests

The 800W max power motor can easily handle slopes up to 18% and on my third trip I hit a local hill that had a very steep mid 20’s incline. It dropped me down to 22km/h on the steepest parts but never slowed beyond that so I was overall impressed with the power of the E3 Pro on the hills.

Heading back down the hill, the front drum brake and rear electric regenerative braking handled braking just fine and the 10 inch tubeless tires coupled with the front and rear suspension handled the small road bumps like a champ. It did make me wish I had the F3 or even the G3 so I could really let loose on those back hills but this E3 Pro model was never intended for that style of driving.

On my way back that day I hit a few gravel paths and the Ninebot E3 Pro actually handled it better than I expected. I dropped the speed down and I wouldn’t recommend it for rough gravel however if there’s patches of smooth gravel you need to cross on your daily commute, the E3 isn’t bad. The suspension kept me in control however on the rough gravel with larger bumps again I wished for the more expensive F3 Pro or even G3 Pro Ninebot model with their higher end suspension.

Power wise, the Segway is quick to accelerate but you can tell the designers opted for a smooth acceleration rather than the raw power some cheaper brands provide. What this means is that inexperienced or younger drivers won’t be overwhelmed the first time they get on the E3 Pro. The only time I really craved faster acceleration was after stopping at a long red light and having a car impatiently waiting to turn as i jumped back on. I didn’t feel that it was bad at any other intersections so all in all I’m not really complaining.

In fact, the inclusion of the turning lights on the handlebars actually gave me more confidence in traffic than other electric scooters I’ve used in the past. Signaling my intentions let drivers know what I was doing and you could see the relief in their eyes when I behaved more like a car and not a drunk madman barreling down the sidewalk not caring who I cut off in the process.

The Segway E3 Pro handled both on street and rough sidewalk driving well and has a good weight balance to power ratio for a scooter in this class. It did remind me of a rental scooter in how solid it felt (not a bad thing) and the people I let test it out confirmed it drove similar to a few rentals they’ve used except the E3 Pro seemed a bit peppier.

Comfort wise, the grips have a nice feel and the deck feels solid without a lot of bounce. When I pushed it a little harder and jumped off a few curbs I never felt I was in danger or that the Segway couldn’t handle it. Everything feels nice and tight like a new scooter should.

The folding mechanism is straightforward if not a bit stiff. You really need to give it a solid kick with your foot to fold it. While it can be a bit tough, it also means it’s not going to accidently fold on you.

I will say the locking method in folded mode could be a bit better as, while it makes carrying it in folded mode possible, it never truly locks and I felt it could unlock on me if I wasn’t paying attention. That said, most people won’t be walking with it folded for great distances and there are tweaks you can find online to make it a little better if that’s a mode you carry it in often.

Segway E3 Pro App

Like all the newer Ninebot series, the Segway E3 Pro can be connected via Bluetooth to your phone. While there are several things you can do to control certain settings directly via the brake and power button (and various combinations of presses thereof), there is no touch screen or control stick on the scooter itself.

Changing everything from start up speed (how fast you need to push off for the motor to start being engaged) to brake regeneration amounts can all be tweaked in the Segway app. You can also change the undercarriage LED light patterns for each driving mode as well as set the brake light to solid or blinking. It also lets you easily switch from Imperial to Metric.

The app also provides a battery and speedometer on a nice dashboard if you want to mount your phone to the handlebars plus it can tell you information about everything from motor temperature to distance remaining to current firmware. The latter also lets you update the firmware in case there have been tweaks or updates since you purchased it.

I really appreciate having the distance traveled (last trip) plus total mileage being monitored as well. This would be great information to know for second hand purchasers to see how much real wear and tear the scooter has seen. It can also be a great way to see how the battery is fairing.

The app can also let you lock the Segway scooter and set alerts including a Find Me option. This is great if you’re planning to do some shopping and need to leave you scooter outside for a bit. While there is no dedicated chain lock loop on the scooter itself, the app can tell you if the scooter is moving away or has suddenly gone out of range.

Final Thoughts on the Segway E3 Pro Scooter

The Segway E3 Pro is a great daily commuter scooter for in city action. It also makes a great scooter for driving around the neighborhood, heading to the park or tackling the pavement trails. The 800w motor and 25km/h max speed (16mph) are a great combo on a scooter at this weight and price point and you get a lot of features from a major brand.

My only real gripe with the scooter is the fact it can’t do 40 km/h but that’s just wishful thinking at this pricepoint. The max 32km/h (20mph) in Sport Mode is a nice bonus for this model and is even higher than many jurisdictions in Canada and the USA allow. That said, I had no problem passing some light green colored rental e-scooters and definitely beat others off the start so the E3 Pro is no slouch.

While this Segway E3 Pro scooter was provided for me, I have zero problems recommending it to people. It sits at the sweet spot for price to power to feature list and Segway scooters are the most popular brand of scooters in North America for a reason. The quality is top notch and I suspect I’ll be putting on hundreds more kilometers on this thing over the next few years.
