How The Beach Boys Convinced Me Aruba Was Worth A Look

Well, way back when the song was just released, it was the first time I had ever heard of Aruba. Even back then it sounded like a place I’d someday like to visit.

These days that song instantly makes me think of an island surrounded by turquoise water lapping against a powder white beach as palms sway gently in the breeze.

I’ve always imagined that Aruba would be dotted with sandy white beaches and clear sparkling water like those from that famous Beach Boys song.

You know what I mean. Beaches like this.

Or maybe even beaches like this.

And most of all, definitely beaches like this.

So, do Aruba’s beaches really live up to my imagination?

Aruba’s Eagle Beach was rated one of TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice top 10 beaches in the world in 2013.

Reviews are peppered with comments saying the “sand was soft like flour… water was crystal clear and a beautiful shade of turquoise” and “white powdery sand, wide beach, warm Caribbean water  – just the perfect combination!”

Not too shabby. I could get on board with that.

On the opposite side of Aruba, the windward coast is packed with hidden inlets and coves. The views are spectacular, and perfect for gazing with crashing waves and craggy rocks.

Check out this awesome Aruba travel video. It definitely shows enough beautiful beaches and clear water to keep a beach lover like me happy.

While Caribbean beaches and beautiful scenery are a definite draw, Aruba also has some fun things to do and see.

Windsurfers in Aruba usually head to the beaches of Malmok and Fishermen’s Huts on the island’s northwestern side. Here, steady trade winds push windsurfers along flat water that’s protected by the offshore reef.

For a change of pace from the beach, vacationers can try boat excursions, horse riding, Land Rover tours, shopping in the town of Oranjestad, and dining on fresh seafood. Kids (and those who are just kids at heart) can visit the popular Aruba Butterfly Farm.

All in all, I’d say that Aruba is worth a visit. But I’m always game for some time near the Caribbean sea.

    Best of Playa Del Carmen Restaurants

    Eating out in Playa del Carmen can be expensive. Many of Playa’s restaurants, especially those on Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue) cater to the tourist crowd. While some are fantastic, they cater almost exclusively to tourists, and the prices reflect it.

    Since we were in town for a couple of months, we spent some time finding out where the locals go for a taste of the real and affordable Playa del Carmen. This is in no way a complete list of Playa’s restaurants, but they are some of our favorites. Feel free to check any of them the next time you’re down there.

    Best Breakfast: La Cueva Del Chango

    With it’s unique garden style patio, and turtle and poi pond under a concrete canopy fitted with glass bottles to let in the sun, La Cueva Del Chango was by far our favorite breakfast place. The decor definitely makes the place stand out, however the food was delicious and a decent price as well. The kids loved walking around and watching the turtles. Their french toast was Charles’ favorite, but Micki and kids loved their granola concoction.

    Best Pizza: Pizza Bella Vita

    When we first arrived and asked people for suggestions on restaurants this place came up more than once. Seems that it was on everyone’s favorite list. After trying it for ourselves it quickly became a regular staple. Only a block from Mamitas Beach, we either stopped here before heading to the beach or on our way back. The pizza melted in your mouth and the calzones were incredibly light and crunchy. The place is run by a young Italian owner and is fairly new. They have some odd topping selections, but after trying most of them out you can’t go…

    Supermarkets in Tamarindo

    Tamarindo’s expensive, and the grocery stores are no exception. Once we got used to the sticker shock after coming from San Jose, we managed to find almost everything we needed at the local Tamarindo supermarkets.

    Super 2001 – Our condo was about half a block away, so this was our default place to stock up on groceries. This is a very small supermarket (only about five isles, so about the size of a convenience store in Canada or the US).

    The good. Considering the store is so small, they have a respectable selection of North American staples. There are some decent bakery items (including pizza) in the cases next to the cashiers. The wine selection was good.

    The bad. Not cheap, but nothing is in Tamarindo. This is the smallest of the three main grocery stores in Tamarindo…

    Travel Photo: Farang Beach, Koh Mook, Thailand

    Koh Mook, a small island paradise in the South West of Thailand in the Andaman Sea is a place of quiet tranquility. Due to it’s small size and lack of almost anything, this is the perfect place to get away from it all. There are a few small resorts on the island however the place remains fairly low key even in the high season.

    Besides for spending your days lounging in the 28°C ocean and stretching out on the glistening white sand, you’ll probably find yourself enjoying a beer or two as your days slowly blend into each other. The biggest excitement of the day is watching the few longtail boats drop off and escort away the guests of the island since that’s the only way to get there. Occasionally you’ll see a sailboat tied up off the tip of the bay and the occasional diving boat might drive by in the distance.
